Egypt and IMF to Finalize Details on EFF Loan Review
by Muhammed Kotb (Egyptian Streets) on November 22, 2024 at 8:35 pm
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the Egyptian government remain in discussions over the fourth review of Egypt’s Extended Fund Facility (EFF) loan program, IMF Communications Director Julie Kozack said Thursday. Both sides are working to finalize agreements and reforms necessary to complete the review. The announcement came after the IMF concluded two weeks of in-person discussions in Cairo, led by Ivanna Vladkova Hollar, with Egyptian authorities. The talks focused on Egypt’s USD 8 billion (EGP 397.36 billion) EFF program, which has been in place since 2016. “Kristalina Georgieva, the managing director of the IMF, had a very constructive visit to Egypt that underscored the fund’s support for Egypt’s resilience and efforts to maintain its economic stability,” Kozack said during a press briefing. The visit occurred amid heightened regional tensions that have impacted Egypt’s economic growth opportunities, she added. Earlier this year, the IMF increased its financial support for Egypt under the EFF, raising the loan amount from USD 3 billion (EGP 149.01 billion) to USD 8 billion (EGP 397.36 billion). The fund also restructured its policy strategy, a move Kozack said would save Egypt USD 800 million (EGP 39.74Continue reading "Egypt and IMF to Finalize Details on EFF Loan Review" The post Egypt and IMF to Finalize Details on EFF Loan Review first appeared on Egyptian Streets.

Arrest Warrants Issued for Netanyahu by International Criminal Court
by Egyptian Streets (Egyptian Streets) on November 21, 2024 at 12:23 pm
The International Criminal Court (ICC) has issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, and Hamas’s military commander, the mastermind behind the 7 October attack, Mohammed Deif. The ICC’s pre-trial chamber announced its decision after rejecting Israel’s challenges to the court’s jurisdiction. The judges found “reasonable grounds” to assert that the three men “bear criminal responsibility” for alleged war crimes, including “the war crime of starvation as a method of warfare; and the crimes against humanity of murder, persecution, and other inhumane acts”, during the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas. Both Israel and Hamas have categorically denied the allegations. The ICC has accused Netanyahu and Gallant of authorizing actions that allegedly violated international humanitarian law during the war, though specific charges have not yet been disclosed in detail. “Taken in bad faith, the outrageous decision at the ICC has turned universal justice into a universal laughing stock,” Israel’s President Isaac Herzog criticized the decision on X. “The decision has chosen the side of terror and evil over democracy and freedom, and turned the very system of justice into a human shield for Hamas’Continue reading "Arrest Warrants Issued for Netanyahu by International Criminal Court" The post Arrest Warrants Issued for Netanyahu by International Criminal Court first appeared on Egyptian Streets.

Egypt’s Digital Leap: CBE to Launch Card Tokenization by 2025
by Enjy Akram (Egyptian Streets) on November 20, 2024 at 5:02 pm
The Central Bank of Egypt (CBE) is set to introduce a card tokenization system in the first quarter of 2025, as announced by Ehab Nasr, Assistant Sub-Governor for Payment Systems and Services, during the 11th Digital Payments, Financial Inclusion, and Digital Banking (PAFIX) Conference. The conference, part of the Cairo ICT exhibition held from 17 to 20 November held the Egypt International Exhibition Center in New Cairo, highlighted Egypt’s advancements in digital payment systems. Card tokenization replaces traditional card numbers with temporary tokens stored on digital devices or platforms. This method enhances transaction security by ensuring merchants never access the actual card details, reducing fraud risks and enabling smoother digital payments. Nasr detailed Egypt’s accelerating progress in digital payments, projecting the total value of electronic transactions to surpass EGP 22 trillion by the end of 2024—a significant increase from EGP 7 trillion in 2021. Similarly, the number of transactions is anticipated to reach six billion by year-end, up from one billion just three years earlier. Egypt’s banking sector has also seen notable expansion. Egyptians in Europe Live in Fear as Immigrant Policies Tighten
by Nadine Tag (Egyptian Streets) on November 20, 2024 at 2:28 pm
Three years ago, in search of better opportunities, 30-year-old Egyptian scientific project manager, Mariam Mahdy, moved to France. While she found a suitable job in her field, the growing anti-immigrant sentiment in Europe made her feel unwelcome and scared. “Some people treat me as if I am a burden, taking someone else’s place,” she said. “I will never be at home in France.” Mahdy moved to Lyon, France to pursue a better education in her field, neuroscience, which has limited prospects in Egypt, according to her. She is among nine million Egyptians who live abroad and one of the 12.8 percent who live in Europe, according to the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS) 2019 report. Egyptians who migrate abroad are often motivated by economic factors and the pursuit of employment opportunities, according to the European Union Migration Drivers Report of 2022. With the core inflation rate in Egypt averaging 11.97 percent from 2005 to 2024, and the Egyptian Pound sharply depreciating this year and for the fourth time since March 2022, some Egyptians living in Egypt face economic instability and aspire to move abroad for better opportunities.Continue reading "Egyptians in Europe Live in Fear as Immigrant Policies Tighten" The post Egyptians in Europe Live in Fear as Immigrant Policies Tighten first appeared on Egyptian Streets.
