10 highest-scoring opening matches at World Cup

Vanguard Nigeria about 2 hours 2 mins read

The FIFA World Cup has produced some unforgettable opening matches over the years, with hosts and contenders often setting the tone for the tournament from the very first whistle.

While many opening games have been cautious affairs, a handful have delivered goals, drama and excitement in abundance.

The highest-scoring opening match in World Cup history remains the thrilling encounter between hosts Germany and Costa Rica at the 2006 tournament. Germany edged Costa Rica 4-2 in Munich, with six goals making it the most prolific opener ever recorded.

Hosts Russia also made a statement in the opening match of the 2018 World Cup, thrashing Saudi Arabia 5-0 in Moscow. The five-goal spectacle ranks among the most entertaining tournament curtain-raisers.

At the inaugural World Cup in 1930, France defeated Mexico 4-1 in one of the opening-day fixtures, producing another five-goal thriller.

Top 10 Highest-Scoring World Cup Opening Matches

  1. Germany 4-2 Costa Rica (2006) – 6 goals
  2. Russia 5-0 Saudi Arabia (2018) – 5 goals
  3. France 4-1 Mexico (1930) – 5 goals
  4. Brazil 3-1 Croatia (2014) – 4 goals
  5. Chile 3-1 Switzerland (1962) – 4 goals
  6. Brazil 2-1 Mexico (1962) – 3 goals
  7. Uruguay 2-1 Colombia (1962) – 3 goals
  8. United States 3-0 Belgium (1930) – 3 goals
  9. Sweden 3-0 Mexico (1958) – 3 goals
  10. France 2-1 South Africa (1998) – 3 goals

Interestingly, despite these goal-filled contests, World Cup opening matches have often been cagey affairs. Between 1966 and 1978, four consecutive tournament openers ended goalless, highlighting the pressure teams face in avoiding an early setback.

As the World Cup continues to evolve, fans will be hoping future opening matches can match the excitement of Germany’s 4-2 victory over Costa Rica in 2006, a game that still stands as the benchmark for entertainment on football’s biggest stage.
