We can defend the whole phase a lot better as a team and be a lot more stubborn and ruthless to see the game out.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tottenham had three weeks to fester on dropping to the bottom of the table during the international break after a disastrous start to their £300 million ($397 million) rebuild in the transfer window.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Roberto De Zerbi’s men took until the closing stages of their fifth league game to even score a goal and a much improved performance was undone by a familiar lack of cutting edge up front.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“For the first time in this season we showed we are a team,” said De Zerbi. “We played for the team-mates, we played together. We believed until the end of the game.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before kick-off, the United supporters took aim at local rivals City, who have been found guilty on more than 100 charges of breaking Premier League financial rules.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the home fans soon had their own troubles to concentrate on as Spurs penned United inside their own half.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Solanke should have opened the scoring when he fired too close to Senne Lammens before Mohammed Kudus blasted wide at the end of a flowing Tottenham move.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Chances continued to come and go for the visitors after the break, much to the frustration of a visibly animated De Zerbi.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Solanke spooned over and Destiny Udogie curled wide before the game appeared to run away from Spurs.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Carrick helped turn the tide with a triple substitution on the hour mark.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Carlos Baleba added more dynamism to United’s midfield on his first appearance since a £70 million move from Brighton, while the introduction of Joshua Zirkzee allowed Matheus Cunha to drop into a deeper role.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">United had barely threatened Antonin Kinsky’s goal until Mbeumo was afforded too much room to spin onto Cunha’s pass and fire into the far corner.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To compound Tottenham’s woes, Bentancur was then shown a straight red card for a headbutt on Luke Shaw after an angry confrontation between the pair.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But United again failed make their man advantage count.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Solanke finally ended Tottenham’s wait since May for an away goal when he outmuscled Lisandro Martinez to glance in Tonali’s cross.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp There’s no hiding from that,” said Carrick.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“I think it could have been different but for a couple of little things here and there, but the reality is the reality, we’ve got to accept it. We need to put things in a positive direction quite quickly.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“We’re more than capable of doing that. We’ve just got to be a little bit more streetwise in moments, a little bit more stubborn and a little bit more stronger and see out certain things.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">United also let the lead slip twice when they drew 2-2 away to Everton and were dumped out of the League Cup by Brighton last month despite taking an early 2-0 advantage.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It appeared that Tottenham would live to regret not taking a series of chances when Bryan Mbeumo put United in front 17 minutes from time.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rodrigo Bentancur was then shown a straight red card for a headbutt on Luke Shaw.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But not for the first time in the past two seasons, United failed to make a man advantage count as Dominic Solanke headed in an equaliser in stoppage time.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Both Everton last season and City last month won at Old Trafford despite playing for over an hour reduced to 10 men.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“It’s different type of goals but it’s definitely something that, whether 10 men or not 10 men, if we’re leading the game, we’ve got to see games out,” added Carrick.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“Whether that’s taking a ball, controlling the game a little bit more, looking after the ball better in their half and around their box and pinning them in a little bit.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Spurs remain without a league win this season, but Roberto De Zerbi was heartened by the response of his side.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“In that moment with 10 players maybe we played with more courage, we played with more energy and we changed again the game,” said the Italian.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“For a long time Tottenham played without this blood, this character and I want, now I am the coach, I want different,” said Carrick.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>“We’re making it a little bit more difficult for ourselves. We can defend the whole phase a lot better as a team and be a lot more stubborn and ruthless to see the game out.”\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>Tottenham had three weeks to fester on dropping to the bottom of the table during the international break after a disastrous start to their £300 million ($397 million) rebuild in the transfer window.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>Roberto De Zerbi’s men took until the closing stages of their fifth league game to even score a goal and a much improved performance was undone by a familiar lack of cutting edge up front.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>“For the first time in this season we showed we are a team,” said De Zerbi. “We played for the team-mates, we played together.
