No fewer than 20 persons were feared dead, while many others sustained injuries in a multiple-vehicle crash at Hwan Kibo, in Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State, on Friday evening.

The accident, which occurred at about 5pm, reportedly involved a truck and other vehicles, throwing the community into confusion as residents and motorists rushed to the scene to assist the victims.

Sources in the community said many people were trapped in the vehicles following the crash, while several injured victims were evacuated from the scene.

Confirming the incident, the Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, in Plateau State, Corps Commander Adelaja Ogungbemi, said brake failure was responsible for the crash.

Ogungbemi said the failure of the truck’s braking system resulted in the crash involving the truck and other vehicles.

He said, “The crash was caused by brake failure.”

The sector commander said many of the injured victims had been evacuated from the scene and taken to hospitals for medical attention by FRSC personnel.

He urged motorists to always ensure that their vehicles were properly checked and maintained before embarking on journeys.

Ogungbemi particularly advised motorists to pay attention to their braking systems and other critical components of their vehicles to prevent avoidable crashes.

He expressed concern over the loss of lives and injuries recorded in the crash, urging motorists to exercise caution and promptly fix mechanical faults before driving on the highway.
