Former Real Madrid captain, Nacho Fernandez, has stated that he would have no objection to voting for a Barcelona player as the Ballon d’Or recipient, provided such a choice is warranted.
He, however, said he would vote for Real Madrid forward, Kylian Mbappe for the award this year.
The 70th edition of the prestigious accolade is scheduled to be presented next month, with numerous elite players from across the globe competing for the honour.
Nacho spoke to El Larguero about several subjects, including his preference for the 2026 Ballon d’Or winner.
He said he would be happy if a Spanish player or a Real Madrid player won the award, while specifically identifying Kylian Mbappe as his preferred candidate.
He said, via Cadena SER: “I see it clearly. For me, if it’s a Real Madrid player or a member of the Spanish national team, I’ll be happy.
“I don’t care if it’s a Barcelona player, because I’ve played with them and won titles with them. If I had to vote? If I had to vote, I’d choose Mbappe. As a defender, I see that every year he gets faster and scores more goals; he’s a physical beast.”
The former Spanish international enjoyed an extended and successful spell at Real Madrid, having progressed through the club’s youth academy to become captain.
He left in the summer of 2024 to join Saudi Arabian club Al-Qadsiah after leading the Spanish giants to UEFA Champions League glory and helping Spain win Euro 2024.
