Flamingos head coach Akeem Busari has reacted to his team's 2-1 victory over Mexico in the Round of 16 of the ongoing 2026 FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup, DAILY POST reports.
Nigeria overcame early pressure from Miguel Gamero's side before securing victory in Thursday's encounter.
Oluebube Umejiaku opened the scoring for the Flamingos with a superb strike five minutes before half-time.
Mary Dunstan doubled Nigeria's advantage in the 71st minute, putting the team in a comfortable position before Emily Delgado pulled one back for Mexico deep into stoppage time.
Reacting to the victory, Busari admitted that Mexico posed a difficult challenge but insisted that his team remained competitive under pressure.
He noted that knockout-stage matches at major tournaments often come with increased tactical demands and intensity, particularly for young players dealing with the anxiety of elimination.
“When you come into this kind of competition, and you get to the knockout stages, it's more tactical and there's a lot of intensity involved because they're young and anxiety comes because it's the knockout stage. Today was a tough game, but we're no pushovers,” Busari told FIFA.
