Daily Post about 2 hours 1 mins read

Argentina captain, Lionel Messi, has become the all-time top scorer in World Cup history.

Messi netted his 17th goal at the 2026 edition, to open the scoring against Austria.

The Inter Miami superstar had missed the chance to break the record earlier in the game, after he rolled his penalty wide of the post.

But Messi was not to be denied as he slotted home from the edge of the box to put Argentina ahead.

He now moves clear of the previous record holder, Miroslav Klose, who drops down to second with 16 goals to his name.

Messi is also the first player in history to feature at six World Cup.

Top Scorers in World Cup History:

Lionel Messi (Argentina) – 17

Miroslav Klose (Germany) – 16

Ronaldo (Brazil) – 15

Gerd Müller (Germany) – 14

Kylian Mbappé (France) – 14
