The All Progressives Congress, APC, has explained that the extension of its National Assembly primary elections in Zamfara State was to allow further consultations and possible consensus among aspirants.
Chairman of the committee overseeing the Zamfara APC primaries, Dr Auwal Abdullahi Aliyu, disclosed this while briefing journalists in Gusau on Sunday.
According to him, the extension approved by the party leadership was aimed at creating room for dialogue among aspirants ahead of the primaries scheduled for Monday.
Aliyu said the APC constituted committees across states to ensure transparent and credible conduct of the primary elections.
He stated that the committee was mandated to conduct a free, fair, credible and rancour-free exercise acceptable to all aspirants and stakeholders.
The committee chairman assured party members and supporters that the exercise would be conducted in line with the law and the party’s constitution.
“We will not take sides. We will not be influenced by any individual or group. Our responsibility is to ensure justice and fairness for every aspirant,” he said.
He added that the committee would proceed with the primary election if efforts to reach a consensus among aspirants fail.
The APC had earlier rescheduled its National Assembly primary elections in Zamfara State, with the House of Assembly primary fixed for Wednesday, May 20, 2026, while the governorship primary is scheduled for Thursday, May 21, 2026.
