Elder statesman, Chief Dan Ulasi, has said Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) remains the only hope of the South-East ahead of the 2027 presidential election, alleging that the All Progressives Congress-led Federal Government has done nothing for the region.
Ulasi made the assertion on AIT’s Kakaaki programme on Tuesday, arguing that Obi would secure overwhelming support across the South-East because of what he described as the region’s feeling of exclusion from the current administration.
According to him, Obi could secure at least 90 per cent of the votes in the region in 2027, as many voters believe the Federal Government has failed to address the South-East’s developmental concerns.
“In this election coming, Peter Obi will make not less than 90% of the votes in the Southeast for personal reasons. They believe they are not part of the system. There is nothing this government has done in the South-East,” Ulasi said.
He criticised the Federal Government’s infrastructure projects in the region, saying the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, frequently cited by the administration as a major infrastructure project, has no significant impact on the five South-East states.
“All we hear is the Lagos-Calabar highway that has no effect on the five components of the South-East,” he said.
Ulasi, however, acknowledged the performance of governors in the region, saying they had made efforts to develop their respective states despite some of them being members of the APC.
The elder statesman further claimed that the region had not benefited sufficiently from the Federal Government in terms of infrastructure and political appointments.
Ulasi further stated that the South-East would use the 2027 election to express its dissatisfaction with the Federal Government and reaffirm its demand for greater inclusion.
“The South is going to enormously vote for Peter. We have to make a point that we are part and parcel of this country,” Ulasi said.
He added: “We are saying we have a right through politics to also air our own view. This is what we believe in. If he doesn’t remember, let us remain where we are.”
