— Senator urges Yari-led campaign council to re-engage grassroots

ABUJA: Senator Suleiman Kawu, APC, Kano South, has urged the All Progressives Congress, APC, 2027 Presidential Campaign Council to acknowledge the economic hardships confronting Nigerians and assure citizens of meaningful relief as the party begins its campaign for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election.
Kawu, who is the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Downstream Petroleum Sector, made the call in a letter addressed to the Director-General of the campaign council, Senator Abdulaziz Yari, following the release of the 223-member council.
In the letter, made available to journalists on Sunday, Kawu urged the campaign council to approach Nigerians with empathy and sensitivity to the socio-economic challenges affecting families across the country.
He said the campaign must demonstrate an understanding of the daily struggles of Nigerians and communicate the government’s commitment to providing meaningful relief.
The senator also called for renewed engagement with grassroots constituents, warning that a disconnect between political leaders and the electorate could create misconceptions and undermine both the President and the party.
According to him, the campaign council must ensure that its activities strictly comply with the Electoral Act and the Constitution to strengthen public confidence in the electoral process.
Kawu also urged the council to clearly communicate Tinubu’s policies, programmes and strategic vision to Nigerians, stressing that the President’s achievements and plans must be effectively explained to the electorate.
He further called for unity within the APC, urging the campaign council to heal internal divisions, set aside differences and ensure that party leaders and members at all levels were carried along.
The senator said victory in the 2027 elections would depend largely on solidarity among members and effective coordination of the party’s structures.
He wrote: “I write to extend my warmest congratulations to the Director-General of the Presidential Campaign Council, H.E. Dist. Sen. Abdulaziz Abubakar Yari, and all esteemed members on your well-deserved appointments. Your selection reflects confidence in your experience, leadership and capacity to deliver.
“I offer my prayers and best wishes for success as we undertake this critical assignment for our great party, the All Progressives Congress (APC).
“As an APC senatorial candidate running on the same ballot and alongside the President, representing the 16 local government areas of Kano South, I recognise the magnitude of the task before us. While we celebrate this appointment, it is imperative that we confront key strategic priorities to ensure total victory.”
On addressing the economic realities facing Nigerians, Kawu said: “We must approach our citizens with deep empathy, active listening and genuine sensitivity to the economic hardships and socio-economic challenges currently affecting everyday families.
“Our campaign must demonstrate that we truly feel their pain, understand their daily struggles and are sincerely committed to delivering meaningful reliefs.”
On grassroots engagement, he said: “A disconnect between leadership and the electorate creates misperceptions and misunderstandings that ultimately undermine both the President and the party.”
Kawu also urged the council to uphold electoral integrity, saying: “Our campaign activities must strictly adhere to the provisions of the Electoral Act and the Constitution, ensuring our efforts are rooted in legitimacy and public trust.”
On communicating the President’s vision, he said the campaign council must “leverage our collective expertise to clearly convey the President’s key policies, programmes and strategic vision so the public fully recognises his commitment to national progress.”
He further stressed the importance of internal cohesion, saying: “Victory depends on complete solidarity. We must heal internal rifts, set aside differences and ensure that all key stakeholders, party leaders and members at every level are fully carried along as equal partners in this mission.”
Kawu expressed confidence in Yari’s leadership and capacity to lead the campaign council to victory, while praying for a peaceful and successful electoral process.
