The Senator representing the Federal Capital Territory, Ireti Kingibe, on Wednesday charged the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to be independent during the 2027 general elections.
Kingibe said INEC must conduct the 2027 general elections in a manner that would reflect the will of Nigerians.
She gave the charge in a statement she issued to mark Nigeria’s 66th Independence anniversary.
The lawmaker said Nigeria’s independence would have little meaning without the freedom of citizens to choose their leaders through credible elections.
Kingibe said: “I wish to use the opportunity offered by this annual event to passionately appeal to INEC to be truly independent in action and name by conducting the 2027 General Elections in a manner that would reflect the will of the people.
“I also appeal to security agencies, political leaders, the electorates and the youth to play their respective constitutional roles at the elections, noting that the entire world is watching us.”
