The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has blamed some of its registration officers for irregularities in the voters’ register, including the appearance of AI-generated images.
INEC’s Director of Information and Communication Technology (ICT), Dr. Lawrence, made this known while speaking about the controversial images discovered in the register.
According to him, some registration officers engaged in activities that led to irregularities in the voter registration process. He noted that the commission was aware of what the officers did and how they carried it out, but admitted that he could not understand their reasons for doing so.
“We know what these people did, we know how they did it, but honestly, I don’t know why,” he said.
The revelation has raised fresh concerns about the credibility of Nigeria’s voters’ register and the procedures used to ensure that only eligible citizens are properly registered.
The presence of AI-generated photos in an official electoral database has also sparked questions about the effectiveness of INEC’s verification systems and the level of accountability among officials responsible for voter registration.
As concerns continue to grow, many will be looking to INEC for answers on how such irregularities occurred, what measures will be taken against those involved, and how the commission plans to prevent a recurrence.
