Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) vice-presidential candidate, Rabiu Kwankwaso, has urged former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar to drop his 2027 presidential ambition and back Peter Obi, insisting it is still the South’s turn to produce the next president.
Kwankwaso spoke on Sunday during an interactive session with journalists at his residence in Kano. He said the African Democratic Congress (ADC), on whose platform Atiku is running, should not create confusion over the North-South rotation of power.
“What is happening in the ADC will not help us,” he said, adding that some people want to bring a northern candidate “knowing fully well that it is still the turn of the South.”
The former Kano State governor admitted that zoning is not written into the constitution, but argued that common sense dictates that when one region has held power for two terms, the other should be allowed to take over. He said fielding another northern candidate would not aid peaceful coexistence and would only breed disharmony.
Kwankwaso also recalled that he contested for the presidency three times before stepping aside for Obi. “I sacrificed my ambition for Peter Obi because he is credible and from the South,” he said. According to him, the presidency would return to the North after an Obi administration.
His remarks come amid growing concern that the opposition could split its votes in the 2027 election if Atiku and Obi both stay in the race, as happened in 2023.
Neither Atiku nor the ADC had publicly responded to Kwankwaso’s comments at the time of filing this report.
