PRESIDENTIAL candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, in the 2027 general election, Mr Peter Obi, has promised to ensure that the Niger Delta region feels the impact of the wealth it generates for the country if elected President.
He said the era in which the oil-rich region contributed enormously to the nation’s wealth without corresponding development must end.
Obi spoke in Asaba, Delta State, during the inauguration of the NDC campaign headquarters in the state.
Lamenting the neglect of the Niger Delta despite its strategic contribution to Nigeria’s economy, He said: “One thing that I can assure you is that the days you don’t see the impact of your wealth are gone. Niger Delta must see the impact of the wealth it is creating for the nation,” Obi said.
Obi who also decried the deplorable state of the East-West Road and all federal roads in the oil rich region noted that “you cannot pass anywhere in the the Niger Delta, yet they are producing the wealth the country share every month.
“We will ensure that that this will change and it will change by the way we manage the resources; it will change because we are going to be transparent. We will tell you where every penny is going to.”
The NDC candidate also promised to prioritise the development of Nigeria’s healthcare system, saying that “We will fix it and make it work,”
He promised that he would ensure that political office holders in the seek medical treatment in Nigeria.
“We will ensure that those of them who are in power must seek medical care here. Anybody that will go abroad will be for referral,” Obi said, promising to spend all his holidays in Nigeria if elected President.
Gubernatorial candidate of the NDC in Delta State, Chris Iyovwaye and Delta Central Senatorial candidate of the party, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege said the people of the state were prepared to vote for Peter Obi at the forthcoming polls.
