AWKA — The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has commenced the distribution of Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) in Anambra State ahead of the 2027 general elections, warning politicians against attempts to disrupt the electoral process.

The state Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Dr Elizabeth Agwu, disclosed this during a stakeholders’ meeting in Awka, where she said the commission would deploy 5,720 Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) machines and 22,880 ad hoc staff for the elections.

Agwu said INEC had procured vehicles for the exercise, while the training of electoral personnel was ongoing.

She warned politicians and political parties against any attempt to scuttle the 2027 elections, assuring that the commission would take measures to prevent operational glitches in the state.

She said Anambra had not experienced such glitches since she assumed office in 2022.

The REC clarified that the ongoing PVC distribution was for eligible voters who registered between January and July 2025, ahead of the November 2025 governorship election in the state.

She urged local government chairmen to commence public awareness campaigns in their areas, including the use of town criers, to inform residents that PVC collection had begun.

Agwu observed that electoral fraud was gradually declining due to measures introduced by INEC, warning political actors against resorting to violence and the use of thugs.

“We must get it right. We don’t want the barbaric way of engaging thugs,” she said.

The REC, however, expressed concern that political parties had yet to begin campaigning for the 2027 elections, raising questions about their preparedness for the polls.

“Start your campaigns and stop tempting our staff with money. Go and do your homework because there’s no longer a shortcut to winning,” she advised.
