INEC will not accept it.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>“We will not tolerate campaign of calumny. Campaigns have been lifted and we expect candidates to go into the field and tell the people what they can do. It is immaterial if a candidate is impotent or if a candidate’s wife’s last child is not the candidate’s, it is immaterial. Just tell the people what you will do for them.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Speaking on vote buying, the REC said, “We will monitor vote buying and we are urging people to report vote buyers. I have never witnessed one, but we call on those who notice it to report to us.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>“The money you will use to buy votes, why not give it to the people during election campaigns and tell them what you will do for them. This is the time to campaign. It is not INEC that engages in vote buying, and it is not done by the police or other organisations, but by political parties. All parties are engaged in vote buying and at the end you blame INEC and want us to stop it when you are the ones doing it.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>She also insisted that the commission is very prepared for the 2027 elections, adding that those planning to use thugs to carry ballot boxes during the election will be disappointed because such stolen boxes would be useless to those who took them.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>“We beg you not to engage thugs, if you don’t get to power today you will get tomorrow. Election is about planning. You must plan, you must engage the people, you don’t just jump out hoping to win because you have paid young boys to disrupt the process for you. We want to assure you that plans are in place and very soon, election malpractice would be a thing if the past\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>“INEC is ready for the coming elections and we have made adequate preparation and I want to assure you there will be no glitches in the 2027 elections. I told you people so during the Anambra governorship election and it came to pass, so I’m promising you again that there would be no glitches in the coming election. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>“It’s 97 days to elections and we are ready. We want the political parties and their candidates to prepare early enough too.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>“We have warned our staff not to take money from politician and if we catch politicians who are luring our staff for result sheets or to rig elections, we will prosecute you. Some people get scammed by people who are not even our staff because of desperation, but they come and say it is our staff. We will not let that happen in 2027.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>“Snatching ballot boxes is now obsolete and if you do it, we have enough technology to make it useless to you,” the REC said.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Meanwhile, FCT Minister, Wike, said INEC inadvertently turned a deaf ear after Amaechi reportedly told voters in Edo State that “only thieves and mad people” would vote for President Bola Tinubu.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>He said, “Many Nigerians have called INEC to sanction political parties, candidates, or some politicians who, in their campaigns, incite the public or raise matters that are not issue-based.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>“We have been told to go on campaign based on issues: what are you going to do for the people? Not on attacking personality, not on insulting individuals.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>“And up till now, I have not heard that INEC has been able to call or draw attention of the vice presidential candidate of the ADC, one Chibuike Amaechi, who has shown he’s more of a… All of us watched on television yesterday, and the media, where he said it’s only thieves that can vote for Bola Ahmed Tinubu. And this was said in Edo, that only mad people can go and vote for Ahmed Tinubu, and that if Edo people vote for him, it means Edo people are mad.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>“This is supposedly a vice presidential candidate of a political party and not an ordinary politician, seeking to take over power and preside over the affairs of this country.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Wike then proceeded to launch a blistering verbal rant at Amaechi and questioned his mental stability, saying men like him would not be allowed to attain the presidency of the country.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>“He cannot preside over the affairs of this country! He said those who want to vote for Tinubu are thieves. So, I’m a thief? That’s what he’s saying,” Wike said.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>He vowed that Amaechi would face severe resistance in his home turf if he continued to insult supporters of the President.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>“You can’t continue with that kind of way and think that we will allow you. We will not allow it! I will not!\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>“I’m not the Governor of Rivers State, but I do know that our supporters will not allow him in Rivers State to do that, and it will be difficult—we’ll make it difficult for him not to campaign in Rivers. He cannot do that.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Wike also decried the indefinite strike declared by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) as action that was politically motivated insisting the FCT Administration had no dispute with teachers.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>He urged area councils to call their teachers and civil servants back to work, warning that “no work, no pay” would be implemented.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>“This so-called strike declaration is political and we will not accept it. There’s no basis for anybody to call for a strike. All the things they are talking about have been agreed and are being implemented,” he said.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>He said the Trade Union Congress (TUC) and the Academic Staff Union of Secondary School (ASUSS), the body of senior primary school teachers, had disowned the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has warned that political parties fielding candidates whose names were not in the registers submitted to the commission at the close of regulatory time will not be allowed to participate in the 2027 elections.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The Supreme Court had in a September 24, 2026 judgement affirmed the constitutionality of Sections 77(5), 77(6) and 77(7) of the Electoral Act 2026 and upheld INEC’s revised timetable and schedule of activities for the 2027 general election.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Those whose nominations might have attracted attention included Rivers State governorship candidate of All Progressives Congress (APC), Kingsley Chinda; Delta Central senatorial candidate of Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Ovie Omo-Agege; former Cross River State Governor and Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) presidential candidate, Donald Duke; and a former Delta State House of Assembly Speaker, Victor Ochei.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>INEC National Commissioner for Information and Voter Education, Mohammed Haruna, explained the implications of the judgement while speaking on Trust TV’s Daily Politics programme, yesterday.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Haruna said the affected parties would also not be allowed to substitute such candidates, stating that parties should not benefit from violations of the law.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>He said the commission was expected to make a definite pronouncement on the implications of the Supreme Court judgement by next Tuesday.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Haruna stated, “It’s like you committed an offence. And then, you come and benefit from it. You remember cases that we had of some in Zamfara, you remember Plateau? The same thing happened.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>“The parties, because they did the wrong thing, they thought they could now steal through the candidates.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>“And the law was very clear. Once you do that kind of thing, you cannot benefit from it. You are benefiting from it, if you are able to substitute a candidate.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>According to him, depending on when the commission concludes its review, some political parties may be unable to field candidates for some other elective positions.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Haruna stated, “All the candidates, all the way to the Houses of Assembly, we interviewed them. If their names are not on the party register, they were not members of the party at the time that they contested for those tickets.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>He explained that the delay in INEC’s final position was due to the need to obtain legal advice after receiving the Certified True Copy of the Supreme Court judgement.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Haruna said the commission had to exercise caution because forged copies of court judgements had been presented in the past.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>He said, “You can’t be too careful with these things because even when you see copies and they tell you it’s a CTC, it may be forged. We’ve seen instances where people have even gone, have the audacity to forge a Supreme Court judgement.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>“So, we have to be very careful to make sure that we take the right decision .”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Amupitan: Unverified Electoral Fraud Claims Could Damage Public Confidence\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>In another development, the Chairman of the Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Joash Amupitan, warned yesterday that unverified allegations of electoral fraud could inflict lasting damage on confidence in the electoral process, even when subsequently corrected.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Amupitan gave the warning in Lagos while speaking at the 10th Annual Conference of the Guild of Corporate Online Publishers (GOCOP), with the theme, “2027 Elections: Trust, Transparency and Shared Responsibilities.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The INEC chairman was represented by Resident Electoral Commissioner, Lagos, Professor Ayobami Salami.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Amupitan, in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Adedayo Oketola, urged online publishers to place accuracy above the pressure to break stories ahead of competitors, warning against the use of clickbait headlines and unverified information in election reporting.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>He said, “While INEC carries the legal mandate to conduct elections, the wider democratic health of Nigeria and, indeed, West Africa depends on the information infrastructure maintained by the media, particularly online publishers. This is where the core concept of Shared Responsibility becomes operational.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>“We live in an era where the velocity of digital information frequently outpaces the verification of truth.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Amupitan stated, “Across our sub-region, election windows are increasingly targeted by coordinated information warfare, political violence narratives, synthetic media, and AI-generated deepfakes designed to inflame ethnic divides or passion and undermine institutional legitimacy.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>“Fake news, unverified leaks, and sensationalised reports directly destroy public trust, incite civil unrest, and induce voter apathy.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>“When an unverified claim regarding electoral fraud is published, the damage to public confidence is immediate and enduring; subsequent retractions or fact-checks rarely repair the injury.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Amupitan said the media had a critical responsibility in shaping public perception of the electoral process, stressing that inaccurate reports could have consequences beyond the immediate news cycle.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>He urged publishers to provide proper context when reporting operational challenges during elections, rather than presenting isolated incidents as evidence of systemic failure.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The INEC chief said responsible journalism would require media organisations to verify claims with the commission and other credible sources, particularly when reporting polling-unit results, electoral irregularities and allegations of manipulation.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Responding to the issue of result declaration, Salami explained that the 1999 Constitution specifically vested the authority to return an election result to the Returning Officer.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Salami clarified that being an INEC official did not automatically confer the constitutional authority to return election results.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>He stated that even as a Resident Electoral Commissioner, he did not have the constitutional power to announce or return an election result.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>He explained that Returning Officers were appointed by the commission and the officials constitutionally empowered to return the results of the elections assigned to them.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>In his opening remarks, Conference Chairman, Dr. Olisa Agbakoba, SAN, underscored the people’s constitutional right to vote, urging INEC to ensure that the 2027 elections are free, fair, and credible.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Agbakoba raised key issues expected to shape political discourse ahead of the elections, particularly the future of fuel subsidy.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>He challenged presidential candidates to explain their positions on the subsidy regime and what they would do differently if elected.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>INEC Seeks Stakeholders’ Support as Voters Register Display Begins October 9\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>INEC in Sokoto State is billed to commence the display of the Preliminary Register of Voters for claims and objections, alongside the distribution of Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs), from October 9 to 15. Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in the state, Hon. The broader Section One corridor was originally designed to cover about 47.47 kilometres.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The ministry also described the Sokoto-Badagry Superhighway as a 1,068-kilometre corridor running from Sokoto through Kebbi, Niger, Kwara, Oyo and Ogun states before terminating in Lagos, with construction proceeding in sections.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>On agriculture, Shoga said the administration had embarked on mechanisation on what he described as a historic scale, pointing to the deployment of 2,000 tractors and other equipment as well as the $1.1 billion Green Imperative Programme being implemented with Brazil.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>“We are mechanising agriculture at a historic scale,” he said.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The President had formally launched 2,000 tractors under the Renewed Hope Agricultural Mechanisation Programme in June 2025, while Nigeria and Brazil had earlier signed the commercial phase of the $1.1 billion Green Imperative Project to provide machinery, technical support and service centres aimed at raising agricultural productivity.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Shoga also cited as example the creation of a standalone Federal Ministry of Livestock Development, expansion of cultivated land for rice and wheat and increased financing for agricultural production as evidence that the government was attempting to tackle food insecurity structurally rather than through temporary interventions.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The CBM DG while commenting on the petroleum industry, said government had recorded improvements in crude production and attracted fresh investments into the upstream sector.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>He recalled the commencement of commercial operations by the Dangote Refinery as well as the restart of operations at the Port Harcourt and Warri refineries in late 2024.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Official Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission data showed that crude production reached 1.56 million barrels per day in June 2026, before settling at about 1.50 million barrels per day in August, when Nigeria met its OPEC quota for the fourth consecutive month.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Shoga further defended the administration’s response to the hardship arising from the removal of petrol subsidy, pointing to the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative as one of the measures designed to provide cheaper alternatives for transportation.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>He said the programme had encouraged the establishment of vehicle conversion centres and attracted substantial private-sector investment into CNG infrastructure.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The Federal Government has continued to expand the CNG programme, including the commissioning in May 2026 of four major CNG infrastructure projects in Lagos, Abuja and Owerri as part of measures to reduce transport costs following the subsidy reform.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Shoga also pointed to the improvement in Nigeria’s external reserves, moderation in inflation and reduction in the debt-service-to-revenue burden as signs that the administration’s economic reforms were beginning to produce results.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Latest Federal Ministry of Finance figures put Nigeria’s external reserves at $54.7 billion as of September 18, 2026, while headline inflation stood at 15.39 per cent in August.
