Leaders of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in Lagos State have thrown their weight behind Mr. Naheem Balogun as the party’s governorship candidate for the 2027 elections, insisting that the outcome of the party’s direct primary must be respected.
The leaders made their position known in a statement issued after a strategic meeting in Lagos by the Public Relations Officer of the Lagos For Naheem Movement, Sunday Efe Forgive.
They said there were indications that Balogun’s name had already been uploaded on the portal of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as the party’s candidate in the state.
The group also condemned alleged attempts to alter the outcome of the party’s primaries, describing reports that another name had been submitted as false and misleading.
According to them, any effort to replace a candidate produced through a direct primary would amount to a disregard for the will of party members and could deepen internal divisions within the party.
The statement read in part: “We will resist every attempt to stampede Mr. Naheem Balogun out of a mandate freely given to him by party members.
“Until the result of the party primaries that produced Balogun is resolved through transparent engagement and adherence to the party’s constitutional provisions, the controversy could weaken the party’s electoral prospects in Lagos State. The integrity of the NDC is at stake.”
The leaders warned that continued disputes over the candidacy could undermine the party’s chances in the 2027 elections if not properly managed.
Some stakeholders also raised concerns about the alleged role of certain party executives in the preparation and submission of the electoral committee’s report.
They further accused a party executive of allegedly aligning with influential political figures to advance his position within internal party affairs.
