Will Nigerians return to buying petrol at over N1,400 per litre?” he asked.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“This is not governance; this is deceit. It is a negotiated bribe designed to be reviewed monthly to suit the government’s political calendar,” he said.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The council commended its presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, for challenging the removal of fuel subsidy without adequate social protection, saying the latest development had vindicated his position.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“Atiku was right all along. This half-hearted 30-day gimmick is proof that the government has finally acknowledged the truth, although it has done so too late and in a deceitful manner,” Ologbondiyan said.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He said the government’s ability to reduce fuel costs, even temporarily, raised questions about why Nigerians had endured high prices for more than 800 days.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“If the government can reduce the burden of fuel costs for 30 days, with priority given to public transport operators, why did it allow Nigerians to suffer for more than 800 days?” Ologbondiyan asked.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“This proves that the government has always had the capacity to make life easier for Nigerians but chose not to do so and only remembers the suffering masses when elections are around the corner,” he said.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ologbondiyan said Nigerians would not trade their future for temporary relief from the hardship they had endured.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“No one-month palliative can buy the conscience of Nigerians,” he said.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“Nigerians are not for sale. explained that the measure taken by the NNPCL to forgo its petrol retail profit margin and sell to Nigerians at cost to cushion the impact of global crude oil price shocks and volatility on vulnerable households has the approval of President Bola Tinubu. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This came as the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress, ADC, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar and the national leadership of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, condemned the move.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Atiku rejected the FG’s proposed 30-day fuel discount at NNPC stations, describing it as a temporary political fix that cannot ease the hardship caused by high fuel prices.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">NDC on its part described the measure as “tokenism” and an attempt to deceive Nigerians.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On its part, the ADC Presidential Campaign Council, ADC-PCC, dismissed it as a desperate attempt to bribe Nigerians ahead of the 2027 elections.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Minister of Finance, Mr Taiwo Oyedele, who made this disclosure, when he addressed newsmen in Abuja, warned that the proposed reintroduction of fuel subsidy by some presidential candidates could hike the price of Petroleum Motor Spirit (PMS) to N2,000 per litre.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He also warned that such a move would destroy the nation’s economy, with foreign exchange crashing to as low as N3,000\u002F$1.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He said: “We are offering a discount on petrol dispensed by NNPC Limited for the next 30 days in the first instance with priority for public transporters nationwide,” he said.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The minister said transporters will be given first priority, adding that the measure is not a subsidy but an arrangement for government to sell petrol at a ceiling cost.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On measures to alleviate the economic pressures households experience, the minister said the government plans forward sale of crude oil to domestic refiners at a yet-to-be determined period and price.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“That preserves your budget, provides certainty to the refiners and price stability to consumers.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“Pump prices do not have to follow every swing in global crude prices or the exchange rate. Borrowing becomes costlier. Capital leaves. Reserves fall. The naira weakens.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“The progress on inflation, which has allowed the Central Bank to begin lowering interest rates, would be put at risk. Our estimate is that the exchange rate could approach N3,000  to the dollar within months, and so-called subsidised petrol would cost at least N2,000 a litre. That is well above what Nigerians pay today.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Oyedele said removal of fuel subsidy did not mean that government is doing nothing to alleviate  pains the policy has brought on ordinary Nigerians.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“Removing the subsidy has never meant doing nothing. Over the past three years, government has acted to moderate prices in ways that are sustainable.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He said deregulation made domestic refining viable, which was why supply has held while other countries scramble for scarce cargoes and that Dangote refinery would not have been able to operate under a regime of fuel subsidy.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Oyedele added that efforts to source cheaper transport alternatives such as through the Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and electric vehicles are part of steps by the Federal Government to reduce the cost of transportation.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“More than 120,000 vehicles now run on CNG, served by over 400 conversion centres, 96 refueling stations and 18 Liquefied-to-Compressed Natural gas (L-CNG) stations.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“Over 550 CNG buses have been deployed so far. Where they run, fares have fallen by 30 to 50 percent. We have also removed taxes on electric vehicles and solar equipment, and cut import duties on all vehicles.
