The New Nigeria Peoples Party, NNPP, has distanced itself from claims that it has joined a political coalition ahead of the 2027 general elections, warning aspirants and political parties against dealing with individuals it described as “impostors” claiming to represent the party.
Founder and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the NNPP, Dr Boniface Aniebonam, raised the alarm in a statement, alleging that some individuals were presenting themselves as leaders of the party and entering into political arrangements without authorisation.
“It has come to the knowledge of the NNPP leadership that certain individuals who have been expelled from our fold have been parading themselves as leaders of the party with an intent to extort money from unsuspecting political parties and candidates,” Aniebonam alleged.
He urged political parties, aspirants and other political actors seeking discussions with the NNPP ahead of 2027 to ascertain that they were dealing with authorised representatives of the party.
According to him, “Anyone who had allegedly paid money to unauthorised persons in the belief that such payments were for nomination or political alliance should seek redress from those involved.
“All contestants, coalitions or political parties who may have been duped should go back to the impostors for a refund of their money paid as contestants’ fees or for alliance.
“The authentic NNPP with the basket of fruits logo is not a member of any coalition. It stands to reason that, as a national political party, we are independent.”
His statement comes amid continuing consultations and political realignments among parties and politicians ahead of the 2027 elections.
The NNPP had similarly distanced itself from the G-100 coalition earlier this month, with its National Chairman, Dr Agbo Major, saying the party was reviewing its options and would take a definitive position on its next steps.
Aniebonam, however, said: “The NNPP will announce certain decisions with regard to strategic alliances with any of the political parties for purposes of the 2027 general elections if there is a need to,” he said.
Aniebonam also named officials he said were mandated to speak and take decisions on behalf of the party.
“For the avoidance of doubt, the following people have the mandate of NNPP as the authentic leaders to speak and take informed decisions on behalf of the party,” he stated.
He identified himself as Founder and Chairman of the Board of Trustees; Dr Agbo Gilbert Major as National Chairman; Comrade Oginni Olaposi Sunday as National Secretary; and Prince Omokanye Adetoyese as National Treasurer.
The party’s current website also lists Aniebonam as Board of Trustees Chairman, Major as National Chairman, Oginni as National Secretary and Omokanye as National Treasurer.
Aniebonam urged political parties, aspirants and other interested persons to exercise caution ahead of 2027, insisting that negotiations involving the NNPP must receive the approval of its recognised leadership.
