The factional National Chairman of the Accord Party, Christopher Imumolen, on Friday declared that no aspirant seeking Nigeria’s presidency in 2027 possesses the leadership capacity of President Bola Tinubu.
Speaking at a press conference in Lagos, where he formally announced his decision to withdraw from the 2027 presidential race and endorse President Tinubu, Imumolen said the President had demonstrated the resilience and courage required to lead Nigeria.
According to him, Tinubu has shown the ability to navigate the country’s complex political and economic challenges without being influenced by ethnic or religious considerations.
“We have so many candidates that will be vying for this election, but I sincerely doubt if any of them has the capacity. We have talked about Atiku and Obi, but I don’t think they have the capacity,” he said.
Imumolen commended Tinubu for taking what he described as difficult but necessary decisions, including the removal of fuel subsidy, arguing that previous administrations had been unable to implement such reforms.
“Imagine the removal of fuel subsidy. I believe many presidential candidates would have found it very difficult to do. In the last four years, I was one of those campaigning against President Tinubu, but I have seen his leadership style and the progress he has made,” he said.
He also praised the administration for creating opportunities for young Nigerians by appointing them to key public offices.
“I believe President Tinubu is uniquely positioned to provide a seamless transition between the founding generation of Nigeria’s democratic leadership and the emerging generation of transformational leaders,” he said.
Imumolen expressed confidence that Nigeria’s economy would recover despite current challenges, noting that the President had consistently acknowledged the country’s economic difficulties while urging Nigerians to remain patient with ongoing reforms.
“President Tinubu has never denied that there are challenges. There is no way a country with Nigeria’s peculiar circumstances would not face difficulties,” he said.
He cautioned Nigerians against what he described as unrealistic promises by some political actors, arguing that complex issues such as insecurity cannot be resolved within a few months.
According to him, such promises are intended to erode public confidence in the current administration.
Explaining his decision to step down from the presidential race, Imumolen said it was motivated by national interest rather than personal ambition.
“There is no hidden agenda to this other than supporting a good cause and building a Nigeria that will better ourselves and our children.
“At this critical stage of our national development, continuity in government, policy consistency, political stability and sustained reform are essential for attracting investment, creating jobs, strengthening institutions and building a prosperous nation for future generations,” he said.
He added that he would, in the coming weeks, embark on visits to media organisations to highlight the Tinubu administration’s policies and encourage Nigerians to support the President’s re-election bid in 2027.
