A chieftain of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) Buba Galadima, says the party is working to harmonise areas of difference between its presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and his running mate, Rabiu Kwankwaso, ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
Galadima, an ally of Kwankwaso, said Obi and Kwankwaso were “on the same page” despite having contested the 2023 presidential election on different platforms and with different policy blueprints.
He made this known on Thursday during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today programme.
Asked whether Obi and Kwankwaso were pursuing the same agenda, Galadima said, “As far as I am concerned and as far as I know, they do. And we are harmonising issues because both leaders ran in 2023 on different platforms and they have different blueprints, which we are now harmonising.”
The NDC chieftain added that he had just chaired a meeting where some of the issues were discussed.
“We are harmonising some grey areas and I am sure they will accept our recommendation. They are on the same page. They are close to each other, every second, every minute, hour, week, month of the calendar,” he said.
‘Single Ticket’ For Nigeria
Galadima also described the Obi-Kwankwaso ticket as a single ticket for the country when asked about concerns over the North having African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar on the ballot in 2027.
“We are running a single ticket of prominent, experienced, knowledgeable, entrenched Nigerians and this is our game.
“Peter Obi and Kwankwaso will win this election if it is free, fair, and credible unless there is someone with a machinery willing to take it away from them,” he said.
Obi and Kwankwaso are running on the NDC platform, with Obi as the presidential candidate and Kwankwaso as his running mate.
The pairing brings together two politicians who contested separately in the 2023 presidential election. Obi contested under the Labour Party, while Kwankwaso ran under the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP).
In the 2023 election, Obi finished third with 6,101,533 votes, behind the Peoples Democratic Party’s Atiku Abubakar, who polled 6,984,520 votes, and the eventual winner, Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress, who secured 8,794,726 votes.
Obi and the Labour Party challenged the result at the Presidential Election Petition Court, but the petition was dismissed in September 2023. The Supreme Court subsequently upheld Tinubu’s victory.
2027 Race
The political configuration has since changed ahead of the 2027 election.
Atiku is now seeking the presidency on the platform of the ADC, while President Tinubu is seeking a second term.
Omoyele Sowore will join the battle under the African Action Congress (AAC).
The Independent National Electoral Commission has scheduled the Presidential and National Assembly elections for January 16, 2027.
Meanwhile, the final list of the 18 presidential candidates and their running mates was officially published by the commission.
