2027: Obi, Kwankwaso to pick key members of campaign council – NDC

The Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, has announced that its presidential and vice-presidential candidates, Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso, respectively, are expected to recommend nominees for several key positions within the Presidential Campaign Council, PCC. These include the positions of Director-General, Deputy Director-General, campaign spokesperson, Director of Social Media, and Financial Controller.

NDC National Chairman Senator Moses Cleopas Zuwoghe disclosed this during a press conference held at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja on Saturday. He noted that the organisational structure and campaign schedule of the Presidential Campaign Council had been finalised since late August.

According to Zuwoghe, the inauguration of the council is contingent on the completion of the presidential candidate’s vetting process and the finalisation of nominations for key campaign positions.

Speaking to journalists on the outcome of the National Working Committee’s deliberations, the NDC national chairman announced that October 20, 2026, had been designated for the inauguration of the Presidential Campaign Council, the presentation of Certificates of Return to candidates for the 2027 general elections, and a strategic dinner bringing together candidates contesting various elective positions nationwide.

Zuwoghe explained that the activities scheduled for October 20 would be preceded by a National Executive Committee meeting on the same day, during which major decisions concerning the party’s preparations for the elections would be deliberated upon and formally approved.

The presidential and vice-presidential candidates are also expected to nominate two additional officers who, together with the party’s national treasurer, will oversee the management of the campaign council’s independent and dedicated financial account.

Zuwoghe emphasised that the arrangement underscored the importance of involving the candidates in decisions that would significantly influence the organisation, financing, and strategic direction of their campaign.

He maintained that the party leadership, the presidential candidate, his running mate, and the national leader, Senator Henry Seriake Dickson, were united on the process and the broader preparations for the 2027 elections.

The chairman said the NDC would announce the composition of the campaign council once the party’s national leadership received the candidates’ nominations and recommendations.

He explained that establishing the campaign council without the active participation of the presidential candidate and his running mate would be inappropriate, given their central roles in the presidential contest.

According to him, “The candidates must also provide direction on campaign funding arrangements to ensure that the council operates within an agreed framework.”

The party said the approach was intended to prevent avoidable disagreements over appointments and responsibilities while ensuring that the eventual structure could effectively coordinate the presidential campaign nationwide.
