Up till now, I have not heard that INEC has been able to call or draw the attention of the vice presidential candidate of the ADC, Rotimi Amaechi, to this,” the minister said.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He also challenged the media to press the opposition for accountability instead of staying neutral in the face of what he called unsubstantiated insults against the president and his supporters.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wike raised questions about projects during Amaechi’s time as governor of Rivers State, including a multi-million-dollar hospital, the state monorail, the sale of a state-owned gas turbine and a state-wide fumigation contract.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“I challenge him. Ask him the $10 million you paid to a Cuban company to fumigate Rivers State so there will be no mosquito bite. Up till now, mosquitoes have been biting Rivers people, including myself. Ask him, ‘The ₦68 billion monorail – where is the monorail?’ Ask him, Where is the $308 million with which you sold our gas turbine?” he said.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He warned that continued attacks on the president and his supporters would meet resistance from supporters across the country, particularly in Rivers State, and added that thieves and lunatics will not preside over Nigeria.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“If he continues along this line, it may be difficult for him to campaign in Rivers. And I want somebody to go and write it down. Because we will not take that. We will not,” he said.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the strike declared by the FCT Chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Wike described it as a politically motivated attempt to blackmail the administration. He said the FCT Administration had met all its obligations to local government workers and teachers.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“We want to state categorically and let it be known to the public that this so-called strike declaration is political, and we will not accept it. We will not accept it because there’s no basis for anybody to call for a strike. We don’t have any issue with anybody, either be it the area council, local education, primary authority, or secondary schools; we have no issues,” he said.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He announced the immediate implementation of a “no work, no pay” policy across all Area Councils.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The minister said major education bodies, including the Universal Basic Education Board (UBEB), had explicitly dissociated themselves from the strike because existing agreements were already being carried out.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He said the FCT NLC Chairman, Hon. Stephen Knabayi, was a candidate of the ADC in the last Area Council elections and warned against using industrial action for political gain.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“And you can see his interest trying to see that FCT is in crisis, and then he wants to use it as a political tool that FCT teachers are at home, and nobody is teaching students; how can you now come and vote for a government when the pupils are at home? We cannot accept that blackmail. we cannot continue with this,” Wike warned.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The minister rejected the rationale behind the industrial action, asserting that all legitimate demands raised by the teaching body, including promotions and operational matters, had been substantially resolved or were actively being implemented.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“We want to state categorically and let it be known to the public: this so-called strike declaration is political, and we will not accept it.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“There is no basis for anybody to call for a strike. Who did God use for me to become governor? It was Dan.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>He said Orbih was subjected to intense pressure during the period leading to the election, including attempts to induce him with political and material offers.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The minister stated, “There was nothing in this world that was not done to induce him. My governor then sent people to Dan, offered him everything in this world, but Dan stood firm and said, ‘No, I will not accept, I will not agree.’”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Wike said Orbih’s support went beyond publicly backing his ambition, adding that the late politician donated two bulletproof Mercedes-Benz buses to his campaign for security purposes and helped mobilise political structures in the South-south.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The FCT minister said what he valued most was that Orbih never sought personal benefits from their political relationship.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>He said, “Dan is not a typical Nigerian politician. Throughout my eight years as governor, he never came for one day — either by phone or coming to my house to say, ‘I need this contract.’ Never.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>He described Orbih as a politician whose loyalty was tested during periods of crisis, saying the late PDP leader remained dependable when political relationships came under strain.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Wike said, “The only way I can identify a politician that is reliable is when that politician has stood in times of crisis. Loyalty, commitment to friendship, and being a brother’s keeper run in Dan’s family.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Wike also credited Orbih with influencing the political careers of several politicians in the South-south and supporting political bridge-building in Edo State.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>He called on stakeholders in Edo to honour the late politician with a state burial, citing his contributions to the state’s political development.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>He stated, “I will continue to keep my relationship with Dan’s family. I think I will also discuss with the family on how to keep the legacies of Dan.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Former Edo State Governor and incumbent senator for Edo North, Adams Oshiomhole, also paid tribute to Orbih, saying their political disagreements ultimately made him a more accountable governor.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Oshiomhole said Orbih’s position as an opposition leader made him consider how the late politician and his supporters would scrutinise his decisions before taking major actions.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>“So my happiness today is that Dan and I, whatever political differences we might have had, the truth is, Dan made me a better governor,” Oshiomhole said.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Chairman of the Board of the Nigeria Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission, Magnus Abe, recalled Orbih’s influence on his political career.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Abe said he served as Director-General of Orbih’s first governorship campaign under the United Nigeria Congress Party and travelled with him across Edo State.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Abe said, “Dan was, indeed, a bridge builder par excellence. We are gathered here today not because Dan is dead. So, they are family in that regard.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>“But what I don’t understand is the way Minister Wike, for example, behaves as if he can dictate to everybody.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>“There is one video in circulation. He had an event in the Rivers where he was practically sharing positions, telling at a rally, telling people the president of Nigeria, that’s the President Tinubu, will take presidency. He will take governorship. He will take all the Senate members.
