Express support for Tinubu’s re-election
By Olasunkanmi Akoni
LAGOS — Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Deputy Governor Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, and the Oniru of Iruland, Oba Gbolahan Lawal, have urged political leaders to uphold democratic principles, promote patriotism and place national interest above personal ambition.
They made the call on Sunday during separate meetings with members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Forum of State Chairmen, led by its chairman and Lagos APC Chairman, Pastor Cornelius Ojelabi, at the Governor’s Marina residence, the Deputy Governor’s residence in Ikoyi and the Oniru Palace in Victoria Island.
The three leaders also expressed support for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election in 2027, saying his administration should be given more time to implement its policies.
Sanwo-Olu urged the APC chairmen to remain committed to the nation’s development and prioritise the welfare of citizens.
He said President Tinubu had taken significant steps to stabilise the economy and strengthen national institutions.
Hamzat said continuity would enable the administration’s policies to achieve their intended long-term impact.
He also called on elected officials to strengthen engagement with party structures, noting that political office holders emerged through political parties and should maintain close relationships with them.
“You cannot be a candidate for any election unless you are a member of a political party. It is important that every elected official understands the significance and value of our party,” he said.
The deputy governor encouraged the APC chairmen to maintain regular consultations with governors and other elected officials to offer constructive advice that could improve governance.
He also urged the forum to exchange ideas and learn from governance models in other states and African countries.
Reflecting on Tinubu’s tenure as Lagos governor, Hamzat highlighted projects such as the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA), the Lagos Rail Mass Transit system and the Eko Atlantic City project as examples of long-term planning and infrastructure development.
He also commended the ongoing Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway project, describing road infrastructure as a key driver of economic growth.
Hamzat called on political leaders to embrace patriotism and pursue policies that would benefit future generations.
“As a country, we must make sure we build our nation. We must not fail our young citizens. Political leaders must put Nigeria’s interests above personal ambitions,” he said.
Speaking at the Oniru Palace, Oba Gbolahan Lawal urged party members to remain united and work towards the re-election of President Tinubu in 2027.
He expressed confidence in the President’s leadership and said the administration still had more to contribute to the country’s development.
