The Social Democratic Party, SDP, has rejected any involvement in the proposed ‘rainbow coalition’, insisting that it remains committed to fielding its candidates and working with opposition parties to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, in the 2027 general elections.
The National Chairman of the SDP, Prof. Sadiq Gombe, disclosed this on Thursday while addressing journalists after a meeting with the party's governorship candidates drawn from different states of the federation.
Gombe accused the ruling party of attempting to infiltrate opposition parties through the Rainbow Coalition in a bid to weaken their ranks ahead of the 2027 elections.
He, however, said the SDP was working with other opposition parties to build an alliance capable of rescuing Nigeria through a coalition of Nigerians.
"We don't have anything to do with Rainbow Coalition. SDP is aligned with other political parties in the opposition, doing everything possible towards the rescue of our dear country in a coalition of the Nigerian people," he said.
According to him, the opposition parties are exploring ways to establish a common ground, train their polling agents together and operate joint situation rooms to protect their votes during the elections.
He said the arrangement would enable opposition parties to monitor the electoral process effectively and ensure credible outcomes at polling units.
"We will be our own INEC at the polling unit, we will be our own security at the polling unit to make sure that there must be free, fair and credible elections come 2027," Gombe added.
DAILY POST reports that while a Rainbow Coalition led by the Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike is working for the re-election of President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 election.
