Timi Frank, a former Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress, APC, has alleged a plot to attack African Democratic Congress, ADC, presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, and other opposition figures ahead of the January 16, 2027 presidential election.
Frank raised the alarm in a statement on Monday, appealing to United States President Donald Trump to intervene.
He described the allegation as serious and called for urgent attention from the international community to prevent Nigeria from sliding into anarchy.
"These allegations must be independently and urgently investigated. Given their gravity, however, they cannot be dismissed or ignored until it is too late to prevent harm," he said.
According to him, protecting opposition leaders under President Bola Tinubu's administration is a fundamental obligation.
"The protection of political opposition is not a favour that any government grants at its discretion. It is a fundamental obligation of every democratic state," he stated.
He added that his call was not just about Atiku Abubakar but also about leaders of other opposition parties who felt unsafe ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
"The concern is not that Atiku Abubakar should be placed above the law. The concern is that the law must never be placed at the service of political persecution," he said.
Timi Frank's allegation comes as the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, reopened a corruption case against Atiku Abubakar relating to his time as the country's vice president.
This followed a 14-day ultimatum issued to the EFCC by former Edo lawmaker, Ehiozuwa Johnson Agbonayinma.
DAILY POST reports that President Tinubu, Atiku and 16 other presidential candidates are seeking votes ahead of the 2027 election.
