Director-General of the City Boy","\u003Cdiv style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" >\u003C\u002Fdiv>\n\u003Cp>\u003Cem>The City Boy Movement has set machinery in motion towards actualising the ultimate goal of getting President Bola Tinubu re-elected during the January, 2027 poll.\u003C\u002Fem>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Director-General of the City Boy Movement (CBM), Francis Shoga, has declared that no candidate is better positioned than President Bola Tinubu to advance Nigeria’s development beyond 2027.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>He cited far-reaching gains in infrastructure, agriculture, energy and economic reforms since the President assumed office on May 29, 2023\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Shoga, who made this disclosure while speaking with newsmen in Abuja on Thursday, stated that the scale of projects and reforms undertaken by the Tinubu government showed that the President deserved the opportunity to consolidate them.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>According to him, Nigerians should assess the administration on the basis of measurable interventions across critical sectors rather than political rhetoric.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>He specifically mentioned the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway and the 1,068-kilometre Sokoto-Badagry Superhighway as evidence of an unprecedented infrastructure push under the administration.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>According to him, government is “building the two longest highways in our history,” alongside rehabilitation and construction works on several federal roads across the country.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Federal Ministry of Works said the first 30 kilometres of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway was inaugurated by Tinubu on May 31, 2025, out of the 40.7-kilometre portion then being delivered under Phase One, Section One. The broader Section One corridor was originally designed to cover about 47.47 kilometres.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The ministry also described the Sokoto-Badagry Superhighway as a 1,068-kilometre corridor running from Sokoto through Kebbi, Niger, Kwara, Oyo and Ogun states before terminating in Lagos, with construction proceeding in sections.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>On agriculture, Shoga said the administration had embarked on mechanisation on what he described as a historic scale, pointing to the deployment of 2,000 tractors and other equipment as well as the $1.1 billion Green Imperative Programme being implemented with Brazil.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>“We are mechanising agriculture at a historic scale,” he said.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The President had formally launched 2,000 tractors under the Renewed Hope Agricultural Mechanisation Programme in June 2025, while Nigeria and Brazil had earlier signed the commercial phase of the $1.1 billion Green Imperative Project to provide machinery, technical support and service centres aimed at raising agricultural productivity.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Shoga also cited as example the creation of a standalone Federal Ministry of Livestock Development, expansion of cultivated land for rice and wheat and increased financing for agricultural production as evidence that the government was attempting to tackle food insecurity structurally rather than through temporary interventions.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The CBM DG while commenting on the petroleum industry, said government had recorded improvements in crude production and attracted fresh investments into the upstream sector.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>He recalled the commencement of commercial operations by the Dangote Refinery as well as the restart of operations at the Port Harcourt and Warri refineries in late 2024.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Official Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission data showed that crude production reached 1.56 million barrels per day in June 2026, before settling at about 1.50 million barrels per day in August, when Nigeria met its OPEC quota for the fourth consecutive month.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Shoga further defended the administration’s response to the hardship arising from the removal of petrol subsidy, pointing to the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative as one of the measures designed to provide cheaper alternatives for transportation.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>He said the programme had encouraged the establishment of vehicle conversion centres and attracted substantial private-sector investment into CNG infrastructure.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The Federal Government has continued to expand the CNG programme, including the commissioning in May 2026 of four major CNG infrastructure projects in Lagos, Abuja and Owerri as part of measures to reduce transport costs following the subsidy reform.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Shoga also pointed to the improvement in Nigeria’s external reserves, moderation in inflation and reduction in the debt-service-to-revenue burden as signs that the administration’s economic reforms were beginning to produce results.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Latest Federal Ministry of Finance figures put Nigeria’s external reserves at $54.7 billion as of September 18, 2026, while headline inflation stood at 15.39 per cent in August. The ministry also put the debt-to-revenue ratio at about 65 per cent in the first half of 2026.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>He argued that the figures strengthened the case for allowing the administration to deepen the reforms and translate improving macroeconomic indicators into broader gains for Nigerians.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>At its national retreat in Abuja in July, Shoga said the organisation was targeting 10 million youth votes for the President through grassroots mobilisation across wards, local governments and communities.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Shoga was specific that the infrastructure, agricultural, energy and fiscal interventions already underway constituted the basis of the movement’s support for Tinubu, insisting that the President remained its choice to continue driving the country’s development Television.","\u003Cp> \u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>Nigeria’s next president may emerge from a contest involving an unprecedented number of voters. Beyond the race for the presidential villa, millions of ballots will determine who governs the country’s 36 states, occupies seats in the National Assembly and represents communities in state houses of assembly.\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Tuesday told Nigerians that the National Register of Voters reached 103 million following the completion of the three-phase Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise and a final biometric cleanup. The exercise recorded 10,772,421 new registrations, according to the commission’s chairman, Joash Amupitan.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>The number places Nigeria among the largest electoral democracies in the world and makes the 2027 general elections a consequential test of how effectively the country can translate its vast electorate into participation, credible choices and representative government.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>The presidential election is scheduled for Saturday, January 16, 2027, alongside elections into the National Assembly. Governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections will follow on February 6.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>With 18 presidential candidates on INEC’s published list, including President Bola Tinubu, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi, and other contenders, voters will have a choice of candidates and political parties competing for the country’s highest office.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>But the decisions will extend far beyond the presidency as INEC’s final lists contain 4,408 candidates contesting seats in the National Assembly: 1,195 for the Senate and 3,213 for the House of Representatives. Whoever wins will help shape the laws and decisions that govern Nigerian lives.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>However, the most revealing number in the expanding register may not be its headline total but its 43,265,946 voters aged between 35 and 49, who account for 41.83 per cent of the electorate. Their participation could have an enormous bearing on the direction of the elections.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp> \u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>Youth-Powered Number\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>At the centre of the electoral arithmetic are voters aged 35 to 49 who constitute the largest age group, ahead of the 29,777,576 registered voters aged 18 to 34, who represent 28.79 per cent of the total.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>Voters aged 50 to 69 account for 22,982,900, or 22.22 per cent, while those aged 70 and above number 7,402,291, representing 7.16 per cent.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>Summed up, the figures show that younger and middle-aged Nigerians have substantial numerical weight. Their decisions on whether to vote, which candidates to support and what issues to prioritise will matter to every party seeking electoral victory.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>The gender distribution is also significant. Male voters account for 53,528,218, representing 51.75 per cent of the register, while women number 49,900,497, or 48.25 per cent.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>Lagos geographically leads the states with 7,488,633 registered voters, followed by Kano with 6,570,276 and Kaduna with 4,662,640. Katsina, Rivers, Oyo, Delta, Benue, Ogun and Bauchi complete the top 10.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>These differences in voter numbers make the electorate an important consideration for political parties seeking support across the federation. But registration figures alone cannot determine the winner. The decisive question is how many registered voters actually turn up and cast valid ballots.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp> \u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>The 2023 Example\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>Nigeria’s experience in 2023 offers a sobering measure of the challenge. Only 24,025,940 valid votes were recorded in the presidential election, far below the size of the number of voters now reported by INEC.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>The 2027 contest presents an opportunity to improve on that figure by converting registration into participation. Doing so will require more than political enthusiasm or a growing register. Voters must understand the electoral process, know what is required of them, and be able to participate without avoidable obstacles.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>INEC has scheduled the nationwide display of the register for public scrutiny from October 9 to 16, 2026, in compliance with Section 19(1) of the Electoral Act 2026. Claims and objections arising from the exercise will be addressed subsequently.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp> \u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>PVC Collection\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>The commission has also scheduled the commencement of nationwide collection of newly issued Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) for October 9. The cards follow the three phases of registration, which recorded 2,611,266 registrations in the first phase, 4,121,835 in the second and 3,867,997 in the third. The registrations remain subject to verification through the Automated Biometric Identification System.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>For voters, these processes offer an immediate opportunity to check their registration details, scrutinise the register and resolve discrepancies ahead of election day. Civil society will assess the commission’s distribution and clear communication for efficiency, which will be essential to ensuring that eligible citizens can exercise their franchise.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>Some electoral stakeholders, however, argue that the PVC process should not become an obstacle to participation. Atedo Peterside, founder of Anap Foundation, urged INEC to consider alternatives for registered voters who cannot collect their cards, including allowing them to download them.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>“If somebody has registered, for goodness sake, the responsibility for getting his PVC to him should be INEC’s,” Peterside said.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>“Allow him to download his PVC and go and vote. Otherwise, the PVC is being used as an instrument to disenfranchise selected voters, and it happens massively across the country, and it must stop.”\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>Austin Aigbe, a member of the Nigeria Civil Society Situation Room, called for an audit of the register, arguing that concerns about dead and underage persons remaining on it need to be addressed.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp> \u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>Why Are Voters Wary?\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>Yet the challenge is not simply persuading Nigerians that voting matters. A September 2026 survey by Yiaga Africa found that 84 per cent of respondents were likely or very likely to vote in 2027, up from 73 per cent in March. The findings also revealed serious concerns that could prevent this willingness from translating into actual turnout.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>The survey, titled ‘Willing but Wary: How Nigerians Intend to Vote in 2027,’ drew on interviews with 2,470 Nigerians aged 18 and above across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>Security emerged as the biggest potential barrier, with 61 per cent of respondents saying fear of violence could stop them from voting. In the North-East, the figure rose to 78 per cent, while 83 per cent said improved security would make them more likely to participate.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>Trust in electoral institutions is another concern. Only 34 per cent said they were confident INEC would conduct credible elections, down from 45 per cent in each of the survey’s two previous rounds. Meanwhile, 49 per cent expressed trust in the use of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System and the INEC Election Results Viewing Portal for accreditation and results transmission.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>Young Nigerians require particular attention. The survey found that only 40 per cent of young respondents were very likely to vote, compared with 64 per cent of those aged 61 and above. Younger respondents also reported greater fear of electoral violence, lower trust in INEC and greater reliance on social media for election information.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>The findings make voter education especially important. It must help eligible citizens understand registration and PVC collection, the voting process, the role of electoral technologies and the importance of checking election information against reliable sources. It must also encourage voters to assess candidates on their policies and records rather than misinformation or inducements.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>Safiya Bichi, Yiaga Africa’s Head of Knowledge Management and Learning, captured this when she said,” Nigerians have not given up on elections. They want to vote, they see it as their duty, and they believe their votes can make a difference.”\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>Bichi described low turnout as a “conversion problem, not an apathy problem,” arguing that institutions responsible for security, electoral credibility and logistics must address the barriers to participation.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>The survey found that 49 per cent of respondents identified a desire for leadership change as their leading motivation for voting. The economy and jobs ranked next at 38 per cent, followed by security at 36 per cent. Juwon Sanyaolu would serve as the Campaign Council Secretary.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The party said 10 national directorates had also been established to oversee key campaign functions, including strategy and policy, grassroots mobilisation, labour and civil society engagement, publicity and communications, digital media, data and technology, election operations, finance, legal and compliance, and administration and field operations.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the grassroots level, the campaign structure would link state, local government area, ward and polling-unit coordinators to build a nationwide network of volunteers, canvassers, polling agents and supporters.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The AAC acknowledged the role of the SOWORENOW app in coordinating support for the campaign, describing it as an important digital platform for organising supporters and managing campaign activities.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It, however, said the newly inaugurated council was not intended to replace the existing digital mobilisation structure but to expand and strengthen it through physical grassroots organisation, political coordination and community-level engagement.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The statement said: “The Presidential Campaign Council is not a replacement for this digital mobilisation infrastructure; rather, it is designed to upscale, deepen and expand it. The Council will combine the power of technology with physical grassroots organisation, political coordination and community-level mobilisation to ensure that the Sowore–Magashi campaign reaches Nigerians in every part of the country.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“The election is a defining moment for Nigeria, and the campaign would take its message to urban centres and rural communities, as well as state capitals and polling units.
