2027: ‘We’ll campaign with projects, not insults’ — Aliyu

By Musa Ubandawaki, Sokoto

SOKOTO — Sokoto State Governor, Ahmed Aliyu, has challenged opposition parties in the state to present their records of achievements to voters ahead of the 2027 general elections, saying his administration will campaign on the strength of its projects and development initiatives.

Aliyu said the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state would focus on its performance in office rather than engage in personal attacks or campaigns of calumny against political opponents.

The governor spoke at Government House, Sokoto, on Friday, shortly after observing the Jumu’at prayer, where he called for issue-based campaigns and responsible political conduct ahead of the elections.

“We will ensure decorum in our campaign language and refrain from insulting anyone,” he said, adding that political competition should focus on achievements, policy alternatives and constructive engagement.

Aliyu maintained that his administration had executed several projects across the state, which he said would form the basis of the APC’s campaign for another mandate.

He said the government would continue to listen to residents’ concerns and respond to their needs, stressing that public office should be directed towards improving living conditions and advancing the state’s development.

Challenging opposition parties to account for their time in office, the governor urged their leaders to present their achievements and policy proposals rather than concentrate on criticising the incumbent administration.

“Rather than resorting to campaigns of calumny, opposition parties should tell the people what they achieved when they were in power,” he said, according to a statement issued by the Government House.

Aliyu also cautioned politicians and their supporters against abusing freedom of expression during campaigns, saying democratic rights should not be used to undermine the rights, dignity or personal security of others.

He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to protecting residents regardless of their political affiliations and urged APC supporters to obey the law, respect opposing views and conduct their political activities peacefully.

“We owe it a duty to protect our dear state from anyone who seeks to destroy it,” the governor said, calling for peace, stability and mutual respect as political activities intensify ahead of the elections.

Aliyu thanked the people of Sokoto State for their continued support and prayers, urging them to sustain their cooperation with his administration.
