3 African countries that qualify for UK Child Benefit

Moving to the UK from African countries does not automatically mean you can claim Child Benefit. Applicants generally need to meet eligibility requirements, including living in the UK as their main home and having the right to reside.

However, UK rules provide specific exceptions for nationals of some countries.

Here are three African countries whose citizens may have a route to claiming Child Benefit under the rules.

1. Morocco

Moroccan nationals who are subject to UK immigration control may still be able to claim Child Benefit if they are working in the UK.

This is one of the specific exceptions to the general rule that people who are subject to immigration control cannot claim Child Benefit.

    2. Tunisia

Tunisian nationals may also qualify for the same exception if they are working in the UK.

The UK government specifically lists Tunisia among the countries whose citizens can claim Child Benefit despite being subject to immigration control, provided they meet the relevant conditions.

      3. Mauritius

Mauritius is included among the countries that have an agreement with the UK covering Child Benefit.

This means Mauritian nationals may have eligibility under the terms of the agreement, although they still need to meet the applicable conditions before making a claim.

        Other key requirements

Being from one of these countries does not automatically guarantee payment. In general, people moving to the UK must show that they live in the UK as their main home and have the right to reside.

People with settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme can also qualify, while those with pre-settled status may need to meet additional requirements.

The rules can also differ where a child lives outside the UK, particularly where the child lives in an EU country, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland or Liechtenstein.

Anyone considering a claim should check the latest UK government eligibility rules before applying.
