A Nigerian lawyer, Zaenab Olawunmi Adams, has demanded an explanation from telecommunications giant MTN Nigeria over the alleged rapid depletion of her 800GB annual data plan.
In an email to MTN which she published Friday on X, Adams said she purchased the ₦125,000 plan on May 15, 2026, but discovered that her data balance had dropped to 91.45GB by August 27, leaving her with only a small fraction of the original allocation.
According to the lawyer, MTN’s records indicate that about 708.55GB of the 800GB package had been consumed within roughly 104 days.
She questioned how such a large volume of data could have been used in just over three months, particularly because the subscription was designed to last for a year.
In the complaint to MTN customer care, Adams said she had been a subscriber to the network since she was 10 and did not consider herself a heavy data user.
“I do not use multiple devices on the line, I am not a gamer, and my ordinary internet usage is substantially limited to routine activities such as social media, messaging, browsing and other personal online activities on a single mobile device,” she stated.
The lawyer is demanding a detailed breakdown of how the 708.55GB was allegedly consumed. She asked MTN to provide records of her data usage between May 15 and August 27, including the date and time of each session, the volume deducted and her balance after each transaction.
She also requested information on the applications, services or destinations responsible for significant data deductions, where such details are technically available.
Adams said the unusually fast depletion of the annual package raised concerns that warranted a comprehensive technical and account-level investigation.
She is seeking a reconciliation of the data deductions and a transparent explanation from MTN on how her 800GB allocation was utilised.
The lawyer gave MTN until 11:59 pm on Monday, August 31, 2026, to respond to her request with a “comprehensive report and review”.
As of the time of the complaint, MTN Nigeria had yet to publicly respond to the lawyer’s allegations.
