Adamawa court remands 47 suspects arrested in security raid

Daily Post about 1 hour 2 mins read

The Chief Magistrate Court 2 sitting in Yola, Adamawa State, has remanded all 47 suspects arrested during a raid on criminal hideouts in the northern Adamawa town of Mubi.

The suspects were ordered to be remanded in a correctional centre after being arraigned following their arrest during a joint security operation conducted in Mubi and its environs, which led to the arrest of 73 suspects for various offences.

The 47 suspects being prosecuted were arraigned in two batches.

While arraigning 23 defendants before the court, a police prosecutor, Inspector Ahmed Abubakar, alleged that the defendants criminally conspired, armed themselves with dangerous weapons and engaged in violent activities.

The prosecutor stated that the 23 defendants were charged with offences bordering on criminal conspiracy, culpable homicide, kidnapping, armed robbery, illegal possession of firearms, terrorism, theft, receiving stolen property and mischief.

Ahmed informed the court that the defendants distributed and consumed banned substances, including tramadol, diazepam and substances suspected to be Indian hemp, thereby causing disturbances and terrorising residents of Mubi North and Mubi South local government areas.

He told the court that security operatives recovered army face caps, fake police identity cards, machetes, knives, daggers and jackknives, among other items.

Ahmed urged the court not to grant the defendants bail, noting that investigations were still ongoing and that the nature of the offences required legal advice from the state Ministry of Justice.

Another 24 defendants were arraigned before the court by ASP Ezra Bulus, and the court equally remanded them to a correctional centre.
