Adamawa LG farmers protest alleged destruction of farms by herders

Daily Post 10 minutes 1 mins read

Farmers from various communities across Song Local Government Area of Adamawa State have protested alleged repeated destruction of their farmlands by herders.

The farmers, who gathered at the local government headquarters in Song town, accused herders of allowing their cattle to stray into farmlands and destroy crops.

The protesters, mostly from Orr Mountain, Djarakin, Didango, Loko, Kichiu, Hombo, Garin-Tuwo and Balma communities, carried placards with inscriptions including, “Governor Fintiri, Save Us. Our Farmlands Have Been Destroyed,” “We Say No to Destruction of Farms” and “We Need Peace and Government Intervention.”

At the Song Council Secretariat, the Council Information Officer, Vincent Baldeno, who received the farmers on behalf of the Executive Chairman, Idris Yahaya, assured them that their grievances would be communicated to the appropriate authorities.

Baldeno added that the government would take necessary measures to address the situation and appealed to the farmers to remain peaceful.

DAILY POST reports that the protest is a rare occurrence in Song, which is regarded as one of the most peaceful local government areas in Adamawa State.

The area is rarely mentioned in reports of insecurity, including herder-farmer clashes, communal conflicts and insurgency.
