Internal disagreements should not distract us from our collective objective of providing Nigerians with a credible alternative,” he said.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>He added: “As things stand, we have a common objective. We need unity of purpose and must avoid comments that could weaken our collective resolve. Likewise, no political party can flourish if it is denied the right to manage its affairs in accordance with its own constitution. The real challenge is finding the right balance between judicial oversight and party autonomy.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>“The legal dispute before the Court of Appeal centred on whether the ADC caretaker committee had the constitutional authority to appoint committees to conduct state congresses. Such questions are properly within the courts’ jurisdiction.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>“This debate is bigger than the ADC. Tomorrow it could affect any political party in Nigeria. Political disagreements should, wherever possible, be resolved through transparent and democratic party processes, with judicial intervention reserved for genuine violations of the Constitution, the Electoral Act and party constitutions,” she said.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Referring to the provisions of the 1999 Constitution and the Electoral Act 2022, Oboh argued that while INEC is empowered to supervise party congresses, conventions and primaries, its role remains supervisory and not managerial.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>She emphasised that neither INEC nor the courts are expected to administer the internal affairs of political parties.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>“Where party processes are found to have breached either the party constitution or relevant laws, the appropriate judicial remedy should be to invalidate such processes and direct that fresh exercises be conducted in accordance with the party’s constitution.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>“This approach restores legality without placing the judiciary in the position of choosing who should hold party offices.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>“If the tenure of party officials had indeed expired on May 12, 2026, as claimed by the plaintiffs, any legal protections tied to that tenure would generally lapse on that date.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>“Courts can preserve an existing legal right, but they cannot normally create a new tenure where none exists under the party’s constitution,” she added.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Oboh who also cited the Supreme Court decisions in Onuoha v. Okafor (1983), PDP v. Sylva (2012) and APC v. But when a citizen dies in the home of a serving cabinet minister, the matter immediately transcends private tragedy and becomes a question of public accountability.’’\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>In a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, ADC said, ‘’The only acceptable response in a constitutional democracy is a thorough, transparent and independent investigation that commands public confidence.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>‘’The explanations offered so far have done little to answer the questions that continue to trouble Nigerians. What exactly was the nature of Ms. Habila’s official assignment? Why was she residing in the Minister’s private residence? I am very sorry. I just can’t continue to bear the painful hostile treatment I keep getting from some leaders from Kaduna, especially Mallam Nasir.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>He claimed that he had been reduced “to the status of a bastard” within a coalition he had worked hard to build, alleging that decisions concerning leadership representation in Kaduna were being manipulated to sideline him.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The development is likely to heighten concerns over the alliance’s internal cohesion, particularly in Kaduna, a state considered strategically important to the coalition’s electoral calculations. It marks one of the most serious public cracks within the ADC-led opposition coalition ahead of the 2027 general elections.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Lukman, a former National Vice Chairman (North-West) of the All Progressives Congress (APC), said he had devoted more than a year to reconciling and uniting opposition leaders in Kaduna, only to become the target of what he described as an orchestrated campaign led by El-Rufai and his supporters.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>He explained, “For Mallam Nasir and his people, I am the problem. I have decided to resolve the problem for them and everyone.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>He announced the suspension of both his ADC and coalition memberships, saying it was preferable “to be inactive than to continue to chase dashed expectations.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Lukman also questioned the coalition’s commitment to democratic values, accusing some of its leaders of reproducing the same political practices they had once criticised. He said that for many coalition leaders, “the objective of rescuing the democracy is just about allowing them to have their way, even when their actions reproduce the old habits that destroyed our former parties.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>He further alleged that former Rivers State governor, Rotimi Amaechi, was reaching out to individuals in Kaduna whose commitment to building the ADC was questionable, while disregarding the views of those who had invested in strengthening the party’s structures.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>He stated that “whatever he wants to do with them is certainly not about building the party into a strong democratic party,” stressing that the developments had steadily diminished his confidence in the coalition and reduced the ADC to what he described That’s online registration. In terms of technology, we continue to deploy our Bi-modal Voter Accreditation System.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Amupitan noted that the commission has resolved to train its staff  online before the physical training ahead of the elections.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>He stated: “We have also undertaken comprehensive reviews of our cyber security, cyber architecture, the data systems, our residents, penetration testing, disaster recovery mechanism and communication protocols. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>“In addition to communication to technology itself, public confidence is better. Yes, the public trust is very low. But at the same time, we believe with the outcome of our elections, we will be able to build the confidence. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>“As it is, like I shared with you in my office, one of the challenges we have is that of misinformation. And the increase in use of AI to promote disinformation.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Amupitan noted that in terms of logistics and personnel, the commission has commenced early procurement and logistics planning.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>He said: “There are some, you know, several issues on the cards. Independent National Electoral Commission INEC on Thursday said it is set to conduct a comprehensive audit of its systems ahead of the 2027 general election in order to forestall a repeat of the technical glitches that trailed the 2023 presidential election.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>This was as it raised concerns over disinformation and the criminal deployment of Artificial Intelligence AI in the electoral process.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The Commission gave the assurance when its Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan SAN, received the United Kingdom High Commissioner to Nigeria, Dr Richard Montgomery and his team at the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Amupitan described the visit as part of ongoing collaboration between both countries on election and cyber security ahead of 2027.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The INEC Chairman told the visiting delegation that the Commission’s preparations had been shaped by extensive post-election reviews involving political parties, civil society organisations, the media, security agencies, development partners, election observers and its own officials, noting that “those reviews have informed virtually every aspect of our current preparations.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>On the technology front, the Chairman disclosed that rather than overhaul its existing platforms outright, the Commission had opted to improve on them, including the rollout of self-service, online voter registration that eliminates the need for prospective voters to visit registration offices physically.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>“We started this a week ago, and we have gotten some very good, positive comments,” he said, adding that the goal was to ensure nobody is left behind in the process.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The Commission also confirmed it had completed the first and second phases of the Continuous Voter Registration CVR exercise, with the third and final phase — originally scheduled to end in August — extended by two weeks to give more Nigerians the opportunity to register, in line with statutory timelines guiding publication of the voters’ register before elections.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>On security of its infrastructure and personnel, the Chairman said INEC had undertaken a comprehensive review of its cybersecurity architecture, data systems, and penetration testing protocols, alongside disaster recovery mechanisms and communication systems, stressing that the Commission works closely with security agencies at national, state and local government levels through regular meetings to safeguard officials, infrastructure and voters alike.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>He acknowledged that public trust remained low but expressed confidence that the credibility of the elections would help rebuild confidence in the process.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>On the specific concerns around disinformation, he said the increasing use of AI to spread false information was one of the Commission’s major challenges, noting that INEC was looking to its partners, including the United Kingdom, for support in tackling the problem.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The Chairman also disclosed that the Commission was considering budgeting for a full audit of its systems and the conduct of a mock presidential election ahead of 2027, though the plan was not originally part of its budget. “It was not originally in our budget, but if we need to get assistance in that direction, that can help us ahead of the election,” he said.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>On the legal front, the Chairman noted that the Court of Appeal had restored the electoral timetable, disclosing that the Commission had been working to navigate the process even before the restoration, and assuring that despite a compressed financial timeline, INEC would deliver a free, fair, inclusive and credible election.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The Chairman, who noted he had been in office for about eight months during which he had superintended multiple elections while preparing for both the Osun State election and the 2027 general election, It only becomes meaningful when it improves the lives of citizens,” he stated.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The don recalled a nationwide survey conducted ahead of the 2015 general election, saying that he was part of a research team commissioned by then vice-president-elect, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, to identify Nigerians’ expectations of the incoming administration.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>He said the survey identified security as the country’s foremost concern, followed by the economy, corruption, infrastructure and education.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Pate who is also a Professor of Communication at Bayero University, Kano, noted that while successive administrations have made efforts in these areas, Nigerians continue to assess democracy largely by improvements in their daily lives.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>He cited findings from the Afrobarometer survey across 39 African countries, which showed that while about two-thirds of Africans prefer democracy to other forms of government, only about 37 per cent were satisfied with how democracy worked in their respective countries.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>According to him, “This reflects a gap between citizens’ commitment to democratic ideals and the actual outcomes of democratic governance.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The communication scholar also referenced findings from the 2024 African Young People Survey, which revealed that many young Africans are considering emigrating due to corruption and limited opportunities, warning that such sentiments pose serious questions about the future of democracy on the continent.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Pate identified historical grievances, identity politics, social and economic exclusion, youth unemployment, weak institutions and governance deficits as major factors undermining democratic consolidation in Nigeria.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>He argued that: “Identity politics has continued to shape political participation, often placing greater emphasis on ethnicity, religion and place of origin than on competence and shared national values.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>He also expressed concern over the collapse of local government institutions in many parts of the country, saying that grassroots governance had previously played a significant role in resolving community disputes, providing basic services and creating economic opportunities.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The professor warned that: “Misinformation, hate speech and divisive narratives amplified through digital platforms are worsening existing social tensions. Nigeria’s challenge is no longer the absence of information but the abundance of false information and the scarcity of public attention.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>He further linked insecurity to rising poverty, hunger, unemployment, environmental challenges and weak governance, arguing that conflicts discourage investment, reduce agricultural productivity and deepen economic did not originate from the Kogi State High Court.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>“The High Court of Justice of Kogi State did not handle any matter relating to the registration or deregistration of any political party in the country, and particularly the party in question, nor any other matter concerning the political party,” the statement said.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>It equally expressed worry over the use of the photograph of the Chief Judge of Kogi State, Justice Josiah Joe Majebi, alongside that of former Governor Yahaya Bello in the viral post, saying it appeared to be a deliberate attempt to create the false impression that the alleged decision came from the state’s judiciary.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The Court added that although it would not normally respond to misinformation circulating on social media, the inclusion of the Chief Judge’s photograph made it necessary to issue a clarification to protect the integrity of the judiciary.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>It issued a stern warning to content creators and social media users against publishing unverified information capable of misleading the public or undermining confidence in the judicial system.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>“The integrity and dignity of judges, as well as the institution of the High Court of Justice of Kogi State and other courts under its supervision, should not be subjected to false and misleading narratives.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>“We urge the public to disregard the viral report and reaffirm its commitment to the fair and six months’ imprisonment, or both, for motorists who refuse to cooperate with Federal Road Safety Corps officials during roadside breath tests carried out on reasonable suspicion.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Passed by the upper chamber on Thursday, the amendment seeks to strengthen road safety enforcement by increasing sanctions for traffic offences and promoting better compliance with road regulations across the country.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Under the new provisions, anyone found engaging in hawking, trading or preaching inside a commercial vehicle would be committing an offence and, if convicted, would face a N50,000 fine.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Lawmakers said the provision was introduced to discourage distractions in commercial vehicles and improve the safety of commuters.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The bill also raises the punishment for driving under the influence of alcohol or intoxicating drugs from N5,000 to N100,000.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Convicted offenders may also face up to two years in prison or both the fine and imprisonment.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Motorists who decline to cooperate with FRSC officers carrying out preliminary roadside breath tests based on reasonable suspicion would also be liable to a N50,000 fine, six months’ imprisonment, or both.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>In addition, the proposed amendment increases the penalty for ignoring traffic lights, road signs, pavement markings and other traffic control devices to N100,000.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The fine for violating speed limits has also been increased from N5,000 to N100,000, while reckless driving will now attract a N100,000 fine, a prison term of up to two years, or both penalties.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The revised schedule attached to the bill outlines 52 traffic offences along with their respective penalties.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>According to the Senate, the amendment is intended to strengthen the enforcement powers of the FRSC, encourage greater adherence to traffic laws and improve He is a distinguished Nigerian academic, university administrator, and soil scientist with over 40 years of combined experience in teaching, research, university administration, consultancy, and community service.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>“That his nomination is in line with section 171 (4) of the 1999 Constitution as amended, which states, ‘An appointment to the office of an ambassador, high commissioner or other principal representatives of Nigeria abroad shall not have effect unless the appointment is confirmed by the Senate’;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>“That the committee received a petition against the nominee as well as a petition countering the petition against his nomination as ambassador of the Federal Republic of Nigeria; that the nominee was accused of sexual harassment by a colleague at the University of Oye-Ekiti;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>“That the accusation against Professor Fasina was investigated by competent authorities, including the University Governing Council and the Nigeria Police, which both found the allegation false; that the nominee has been cleared by the Department of State Services (DSS);\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>“That the Nominee has been cleared by the Nigeria Police; that the Nominee has presented his Code of Conduct Acknowledgement Slip; that the Nominee possesses the requisite academic qualifications as well as wide-ranging experiences to be Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Nigeria; that his experiences in public service also made him qualified; and that the Nominee is articulate and responded satisfactorily to questions. directed at him by the Committee.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>“Based on these findings, the committee has no hesitation in recommending that the Senate confirm the nomination of Prof. Abayomi Fasina as a non-career ambassador\u002Fhigh commissioner of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Soon after the presentation of the report, while some senators kicked against his clearance, some were in support, especially the President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, and Senator Abdul Ningi, Bauchi Central, while some senators were against his confirmation.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>In his remarks, Senator Adams Oshiomhole, APC, Edo North, who opposed the recommendation, said that it was a matter of public knowledge that the nominee had been accused by two women and that related cases were pending before the courts.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Oshiomhole stressed that while the nominee was presumed innocent until proven guilty, confirming him while the cases were still before the courts could be viewed as insensitive to the concerns of women.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>“I believe it would be more prudent to allow him to clear himself before the courts before confirming his appointment,” he said.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Responding, Lalong said that no documentary evidence relating to the allegations was presented before the committee.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Lalong, who argued that mere allegations before a court of competent jurisdiction did not amount to guilt, said, “If we continue to act on allegations alone, many innocent people will be denied opportunities. An allegation without a court judgment cannot stop the proceedings of the Senate.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>He added that the committee requested relevant documents, but none establishing wrongdoing were presented.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Even Senator Cyril Fasuyi, APC, Ekiti North, who is a member of the Foreign Affairs Committee and was number twelve on the list and also signed that he should be confirmed, however, kicked against it.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Fasuyi, who expressed reservations about the nomination, said that the Federal University Oye-Ekiti was in his constituency and that he was familiar with the case.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>“The woman involved approached me personally and narrated what happened. Although there is no court judgment yet, this is a well-known issue in Ekiti. If this Senate clears him without further scrutiny, many people in Ekiti who are aware of the matter will not be pleased,” he said.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>He proposed that the Senate mandate the appropriate committee to conduct further investigation before confirmation.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>In his remarks, Akpabio, who thanked the committee for the work, said that the committee had reports from the police, the Department of State Services, and the university council.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Akpabio said, “Let me read a relevant portion of the council’s findings:\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>“There were no cases of sexual harassment, thus confirming the earlier investigation by the Nigeria Police Force, which had investigated the matter and found the allegation to be false.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>“During the investigation, the complainant stated that she was not sexually harassed.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>“All documents relied upon by the committee, including the police report, audio recordings, transcripts, correspondence involving the Vice-Chancellor and the complainant, and minutes of management meetings, were attached to the report.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Akpabio further said, “I work strictly with the documents placed before me.
