KAMPALA — The management of Afrigo Band has assured clients, corporate partners, fans and the general public that the band will continue honouring all existing bookings following the death of its founder and bandleader, Moses Matovu.
Matovu, popularly known as “Papa Moi,” died on September 24, 2026, after more than five decades of shaping Uganda’s music industry through Afrigo Band.
In an official communication dated September 28, the band’s management said Afrigo remains intact and committed to maintaining the quality of performances for which it is known.
“All bookings shall be honoured. The band remains intact and committed to delivering the quality performance that Afrigo is known for,” the management said.
The statement, signed by Afrigo Band Executive Director James Wasula, also urged fans and clients not to lose heart, saying Matovu had laid a strong foundation that would continue to guide the band.
“Do not lose heart. Moses Matovu laid a solid foundation for over 50 years. The discipline, talent and values he instilled in the band remain intact and will continue,” the statement said.
Management further pledged that Afrigo Band would continue to live on in Matovu’s honour, preserving the legacy of one of Uganda’s longest-serving musical institutions.
The band also expressed gratitude to the Government, Uganda Police Force, fellow artists and the public for the support extended to the group and Matovu’s family during the difficult period following his death.
The announcement comes amid widespread tributes to Matovu, whose career with Afrigo Band spanned more than half a century and earned him recognition as one of the pioneers and enduring figures of Uganda’s live music scene.
