The Standard Gambia about 2 hours 3 mins read

In a gesture aimed at strengthening emergency medical response and supporting national security services, Africmed International Hospital on Wednesday donated a fully equipped ambulance to the Gambia Police Force during a presentation ceremony held at the Africmed grounds.

The donation, spearheaded by the Managing Director of Africmed International Hospital, Dr. Omar Jagne, was warmly received by senior officers of the Police Medical Unit, who described the contribution as timely and significant, particularly as the country prepares for increased public activities and deployments in the coming months.

Speaking at the handover ceremony, Dr. Jagne said the donation reflects Africmed’s commitment to supporting institutions that serve the public.

“When the request was brought to me, I was happy to respond positively. This is just the beginning. There is a lot more we can do together,” he said.

Dr. Jagne noted that every citizen depends on the police at some point in life, making it essential for individuals and institutions to support the force whenever possible.

“We all need the police. Whether it is me, my family, friends, or any member of the public, we all rely on their services. By helping the police, we are ultimately helping ourselves and our communities,” he stated.

He expressed optimism that the donation would mark the beginning of a stronger partnership between Africmed International Hospital and the Gambia Police Force.

Receiving the ambulance on behalf of the Inspector General of Police and the Police High Command, Assistant Inspector General (AIG) Kalilou Njie of the Police Medical Department described the donation as a “magnificent gift” that would significantly enhance the force’s emergency medical response capacity.

Njie revealed that the request for an ambulance was initiated by a police medical officer who had approached Dr. Jagne, whom he described as a mentor who had played a key role in his professional development.

According to him, news of Dr. Jagne’s positive response generated excitement across the senior management of the Gambia Police Force.

“It was a moment of jubilation for us. Senior management was delighted because this donation comes at a time when we are looking at strengthening our medical services and improving our readiness for deployments across the country,” he said.

He noted that the ambulance would greatly improve the force’s ability to provide timely medical assistance during operations, public events, and emergencies.

“You may see it as a small contribution, but for us it is very significant. This ambulance will help save lives and improve our responsiveness whenever and wherever our services are required,” Njie added.

The police chief further praised Dr. Jagne and Africmed International Hospital for their longstanding contribution to healthcare in The Gambia, describing the renowned medical practitioner as a household name whose impact continues to be felt across the country.

He assured the donor that the ambulance would be properly maintained by the police garage and managed to ensure its longevity and effectiveness.

“We will take good care of this vehicle so that it serves its purpose for many years to come. On behalf of the Inspector General of Police, the senior management, the medical team, and the entire Gambia Police Force, we express our sincere gratitude to Dr. Omar Jagne and Africmed International Hospital for this generous gesture,” Njie said.

The donation highlights the growing role of private sector institutions in supporting public services and strengthening healthcare and emergency response systems in The Gambia.
