The National Sports Commission (NSC) has confirmed that members of Nigeria’s senior women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, have received the cash component of the Presidential Reward for their historic 2025 FIBA Women’s Afrobasket triumph.
Each player received the naira equivalent of $100,000, while team officials were paid the equivalent of $50,000.
According to the NSC, the payments were made on September 9, 2026, with all the players and officials confirming that their accounts had been credited.
D’Tigress secured a record fifth consecutive FIBA Women’s Afrobasket title and seventh overall in 2025, earning the reward announced by President Bola Tinubu.
In a statement issued by its Director of Information and Public Relations, Kehinde Ajayi, the commission said the cash payment brings the entire Presidential Reward for the team to completion.
The package also included three-bedroom apartments in Abuja and national honours of the Order of the Niger (OON).
The NSC said D’Tigress players and officials had earlier received the title documents for their Abuja apartments and certificates of national honours in February 2026, during the FIBA World Cup qualifiers in Lyon, France.
The documents, according to the commission, were duly signed by President Tinubu.
The NSC said the latest payment came after the team’s last match at the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup in Germany.
The commission also provided an update on the Presidential Reward for the Super Falcons following their triumph at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco in July and August 2026.
It said the Falcons had already received the title documents for their three-bedroom apartments in Abuja, as well as their certificates of national honours, during the tournament.
The cash component for the Super Falcons is expected to be paid before their next official engagements, with each player entitled to the naira equivalent of $100,000 and each official $50,000.
The NSC said the rewards form part of the Federal Government’s efforts to prioritise the welfare of Nigerian athletes.
The commission described the rewards as being in line with President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope initiative and Shared Prosperity agenda, which it said places athletes’ welfare and appropriate rewards among its priorities.
It also commended President Tinubu for his support for Nigerian sports, saying his administration’s policies had strengthened the commission’s reform efforts and its drive towards developing a sustainable sports economy.
The NSC further acknowledged the contributions of the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, the Minister of Housing and Urban Development, the Minister of Special Duties and Inter-Governmental Affairs, and the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation.
It said the collaboration among the relevant authorities enabled the Presidential Rewards to be implemented within the due process requirements.
