After protests, FG bows to pressure, releases SSANU 8 months salary arrears

Daily Post about 1 hour 2 mins read

The Federal Government has bowed to pressure and released eight months’ salary arrears for the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, SSANU.

This is coming two days after SSANU gave the government a 14-day ultimatum to implement the 2026 FGN/SSANU Agreement.

Reacting to the development, the association said the swift intervention of the government underscored the commitment of the Minister of Education, Dr Maruf Tunji Alausa, to honouring agreements reached with university-based unions.

DAILY POST reports that SSANU had, in a statement, demanded the quick release of funds and full payment of outstanding Consolidated University Teaching and Tertiary Institutions Salary Structure, CONTTA, arrears calculated from January 1, 2026.

The association cautioned that if the government failed within 14 days, it would be forced to resume a “total, comprehensive and indefinite strike action” without further notice.

The government has, however, released the funds in less than 48 hours to prevent a looming disruption of academic activities across Nigerian universities.

SSANU President, Mohammed Ibrahim, while confirming the release of the eight months’ arrears, said the development is a demonstration that constructive engagement, when matched with prompt action, can protect industrial harmony and workers’ welfare.
