The Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of Zone 11 Headquarters, Osogbo, AIG Bassey Ewah, has ordered an investigation into a viral video allegedly showing police officers assaulting a suspect in Ede, Osun State.

The police authority disclosed that the officers involved in the incident, which reportedly occurred on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, had been identified and steps taken to investigate their conduct.

This was made known in a press statement issued on Wednesday by the Zonal Police Public Relations Officer, SP Ojedele Olanrewaju Tunji.

The police reaction is coming after public reactions to the video circulating on social media.

According to the statement, AIG Ewah "expressed serious concern over the incident and assured residents that the Nigeria Police Force would not tolerate brutality, intimidation or abuse of power by its personnel.

"The Nigeria Police Force does not condone any form of brutality, intimidation or abuse of power by its personnel."

Ewah stressed that although police officers had constitutional responsibilities to enforce the law and maintain public order, they were expected to discharge their duties professionally and with restraint.

He added that officers must demonstrate discipline and respect for the fundamental human rights and dignity of every individual, irrespective of the circumstances surrounding an arrest or police operation.

The AIG disclosed that investigations had commenced to establish the circumstances surrounding the alleged assault, warning that any officer found culpable would face appropriate disciplinary action.

"Any officer found culpable of misconduct or violation of established police regulations will face appropriate disciplinary measures in accordance with the extant laws and regulations of the Nigeria Police Force," the statement added.

The police boss reiterated the Force's commitment to accountability, transparency and the protection of lives and property, maintaining that no police officer was above the law.

He also warned officers against using their uniforms as a licence to violate citizens' rights, stressing that the authority of the police must be exercised within the provisions of the law.

Meanwhile, members of the public were urged to remain calm, avoid premature conclusions and allow the appropriate authorities to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident.

Ewah reassured residents of Osun and Oyo states that Zone 11 Headquarters would continue to uphold professionalism, discipline and accountability while working to sustain public trust and confidence in the Nigeria Police Force.
