Former Group Executive Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Mr. Efiong D. Akan, has called for urgent efforts to preserve the cultural heritage of the Uruan people and renew the campaign for the reclamation of Bakassi, as he unveiled a new book chronicling the history and identity of the Iboku people.

The book – Uruan: The Iboku People of the Geographical South Eastern Nigeria and Their Bakassi Economic Zone – was recently presented at the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs (NIIA), Victoria Island, Lagos, drawing prominent scholars, business leaders, traditional stakeholders and public figures.

Speaking at the event, Akan said the publication was aimed at preserving the history, identity and heritage of the Uruan people for future generations.

“This book is not merely about recounting the past. It is about preserving our identity, protecting our heritage and ensuring that future generations understand who we are and where we come from.”

The author also used the occasion to advocate renewed efforts towards reclaiming Bakassi, appealing to legal practitioners and stakeholders to support the cause.

“I want to appeal to the lawyers present here, including Senator Udo Udoma, to lend their expertise and support towards efforts aimed at reclaiming Bakassi,” he said.

Chairman of the occasion, Captain Augustine Okon Otuekong, described the Uruan people as a strategic ethnic group in Akwa Ibom State whose contributions have significantly impacted both the state and the nation.

“While Uruan’s proximity to Uyo often defines its geographical relevance, the true identity of the people lies in their language, customs, values and shared heritage,” Otuekong said.

He also commended former Group Managing Director of UAC Foods, Mr. Larry Ettah, for his efforts in promoting the achievements and cultural values of the Uruan people on national platforms.

The first reviewer of the book, Sir (Dr.) Opeyemi Olukayode Agbaje, Chairman of the National Pension Commission, described the publication as an important contribution to the documentation of indigenous history and identity.

Agbaje, who greeted members of the Uruan and Iboku communities in their native language at the start of his review, praised the author’s commitment to preserving the people’s history and culture.

He also paid tribute to Larry Ettah, describing him as “a worthy ambassador of the Iboku people within Nigeria’s business community.”

Delivering the second review, Rear Admiral Francis Dan Akpan Richard acknowledged the depth of Agbaje’s analysis before offering additional perspectives on the historical themes explored in the publication.

“Dr. Agbaje has done such a comprehensive review that he has significantly eased my assignment,” Richard remarked before highlighting other dimensions of the book.

Among the distinguished guests at the event was former Minister and Senator, Senator Udo Udoma, who was recognised as one of Uruan’s most accomplished sons.

Responding to Akan’s remarks, Udoma congratulated the author on what he described as a remarkable achievement and commended his dedication to the development of Akwa Ibom State and the Uruan people.

“Efiong Akan has demonstrated a deep passion for the development of Akwa Ibom State and particularly the Uruan people. This book is a remarkable achievement and an important contribution to our history,” Udoma said.

The event also featured colourful cultural performances by traditional dancers, who showcased the artistic heritage and enduring traditions of the Uruan people.

The high point of the ceremony was the formal unveiling of the book by Agbaje alongside Akan, Otuekong, Udoma, Larry Ettah, Mr. Udeme Ufot and Rear Admiral Richard.

Participants said the unveiling symbolised a collective commitment by leaders, professionals and stakeholders to preserve, promote and pass on the rich history and cultural heritage of the Uruan people to future generations.
