Benue State Governor, Hyacinth Alia, has submitted the names of six commissioner nominees to the State House of Assembly for screening and confirmation.
The submission was contained in a statement released on Tuesday by Zape Upaa, Chief Press Secretary to the Speaker of the Benue State House of Assembly, Alfred Aondoaver Emberga.
Governor Alia said the nominations were intended to reinforce the State Executive Council by introducing more expertise and administrative capacity into his government.
The nominees are Kuma Yenge, Roy Terna, Angwa Monday, Elizabeth Ogenyi, Solomon Iorpev and Nick Eworo.
The governor asked the lawmakers to consider the nominees expeditiously and favourably, in accordance with their constitutional duty.
The latest development is part of efforts by the Alia administration to reorganise and strengthen the state cabinet for improved governance and effective delivery of government programmes.
The vacancies arose after some former members of the State Executive Council resigned from office to pursue their political ambitions in the recent primary elections.
The commissioner nominations come amid Governor Alia’s continued advocacy for stronger institutions and greater autonomy at the grassroots level.
In July 2026, Alia called on governors across the country to implement local government autonomy, describing it as essential to improving administration and development at the local level.
He made the remarks during a meet-the-press briefing organised by the Presidential Communications Team at the State House in Abuja, where he said Benue had recorded significant progress in implementing local government autonomy.
“Our local government autonomy is sacrosanct, and they have it. The judiciary also have their own autonomy. These are verifiable facts,” the governor said.
Alia also urged politicians to avoid politicising insecurity, stressing the need for collective support in tackling security challenges rather than using them as a tool for political advantage.
The immediate task before the Benue State House of Assembly is now to screen and confirm the six nominees.
Once confirmed, the nominees will become members of the State Executive Council at a crucial period as the Alia administration works to consolidate its cabinet and advance its programmes across the state.
