Seven bishops of the Church of Uganda, including Archbishop The Most Rev. Dr. Stephen Samuel Kaziimba Mugalu, are scheduled to retire next year, according to a presentation made during the 28th Provincial Assembly at Uganda Christian University.
The announcement was made by Archbishop Kaziimba as part of his address to the Provincial Assembly, outlining the bishops who will reach the mandatory retirement age in 2027.
The bishops set to retire are:
- The Most Rev. Dr. Stephen Samuel Kaziimba Mugalu – Archbishop of the Church of Uganda and Bishop of Kampala Diocese
- Rt. Rev. Dan Zoreka – Bishop of Kinkiizi Diocese
- Rt. Rev. Assoc. Prof. Fred Sheldon Mwesigwa – Bishop of Ankole Diocese
- Rt. Rev. Patrick Wakula – Bishop of Central Busoga Diocese
- Rt. Rev. John Wilson Nandaah – Bishop of Mbale Diocese
- Rt. Rev. Gaddie Akanjuna – Bishop of Kigezi Diocese
- Rt. Rev. Amos Magezi – Bishop of North West Ankole Diocese
The retirement of the seven bishops will mark a significant leadership transition within the Church of Uganda, with the process of identifying and electing their successors expected to commence in accordance with the Church’s constitutional procedures.
The 28th Provincial Assembly, currently underway at Uganda Christian University, has brought together bishops, clergy, and lay leaders from across the province to deliberate on matters affecting the Church’s mission, governance, and future direction.
The retirement of Archbishop Kaziimba, who has led the Church of Uganda since 2020, will usher in the process of electing a new Archbishop to lead the province into its next chapter. The Church is expected to announce timelines for the election of new bishops and the next Archbishop in due course.
