It became a remarkable encounter between the pain of the past and gestures towards reconciliation.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Former President Olusegun Obasanjo expressed regret, Major General Ahmed Ibrahim Taiwo (retd.), son of Col Ibrahim Taiwo, apologised over late father’s role, and the Asagba of Asaba, HRM Prof. Epiphany Azinge, SAN, publicly declared forgiveness for the Taiwo family.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet, beneath the forgiveness was a condition.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For the Asagba, Asaba can forgive without forgetting. But the community’s long search for closure, he insisted, requires a formal apology from a sitting President of Nigeria.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Former President Obasanjo, who participated virtually as Chairman of the occasion, described the massacre as “one of the most painful, one of the most terrible aspects” of the Civil War.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He said, “When Chief Nduka-Eze (Memorial Convener), some two months ago, came to see me about this unfortunate event and gave me written documents of what I had only heard by word of mouth, I wept.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“I wept that such an event—which is not fiction—happened in my own country, in my lifetime; a country that I fought to keep united, not divided.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For him, the remembrance should be accompanied by a national resolve that such tragedy must never recur.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to Obasanjo, “Whatever may have been the cause of such a brutal act, this is the time to remember and pray for souls that were lost.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“We must vow and pledge that never again will such a dark, black, and unpleasant day occur in Nigeria.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then he made his emotional appeal: “To all of you assembled: let us keep one thing in mind—forgiveness, forgiveness, and forgiveness again,” he urged.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the Asagba’s response showed that forgiveness, for Asaba, is a journey rather than an eraser of memory.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“From the going down of the sun till the morning, we will always remember them. We have remembered them in the past 57 years, and we are still ready to continue remembering them. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“57 years ago, the annihilation and extermination witnessed on our soil is not something that can’t be glossed over.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then came a historic moment.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“On behalf of the Asaba community, and as the prescribed authority -the Asagba of Asaba – I hereby publicly proclaim that we have forgiven the Taiwo Family,” he declared.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The declaration followed the appearance of Major General Ahmed Ibrahim Taiwo, son of the late Colonel Ibrahim Taiwo.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The retired general recalled he first encountered the story of the massacre in 1995 while serving in Enugu and travelling to Lagos through Onitsha.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“I cannot describe how I felt reading it. I felt terrible. And I do not want to imagine how the successors, or the victims and those that were left behind, must have felt”, he said.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Taiwo said he subsequently sought information from three of his father’s friends and colleagues but found them evasive.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His later encounters with online discussions about the massacre, he said, confronted him with two disturbing realities: denial of the killings and attempts to reduce the number of victims.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“I used to come online and start telling people that it happened. I would tell them, ‘My father is the one mentioned. I have all to gain by denying it, but you cannot deny what happened. It is what it is.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Eventually, he said, he felt compelled to come to Asaba personally.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“I have come, in private capacity as Taiwo to render our deepest regrets and apologize on behalf of our father and family for any act of omission or commission on his part that led to this heinous massacre.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“I know it will not right the wrong, but I believe and pray it is a start towards reconciliation”, he said.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For the Asagba, the apology represented an opportunity to demonstrate the forgiving spirit of Asaba.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“In Asaba, we say that Asaba bu anyi’m (Asaba is compassionate\u002Fwelcoming).\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“With a lot of conviction and courage, he open-mindedly admitted the fault of his father and apologized to us. His father allegedly commanded the troops that massacred the people during the war. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“I believe that as a people, we should also have the strength of conviction and character to accept that apology”, Nna Agu told his people.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But accepting the apology did not end the community’s national demand.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Asagba recalled taking the matter to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in May 2025, saying the President addressed other matters but remained silent on the massacre.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“But it will never deter us, and we have made this abundantly clear: there will be no closure, no healing until a sitting President—not an ex-President, but a sitting President—publicly apologizes to us.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“Yes, General Gowon did, but out of office. We need a sitting President to apologize to the Asaba people, and that will bring closure”, he said.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He also questioned Obasanjo’s call for “never again”, recalling that the Odi killings occurred during Obasanjo’s presidency.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“We listened attentively to General Obasanjo, and I note with a little bit of regret: it is easier said than done for us to say ‘never again.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“How long do we say ‘never again’? But it happened at Odi. Odi came years after Asaba, and he (Obasanjo) was sitting there as President when that happened.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For Chief Chuck Nduka-Eze, Convener of the Asaba Massacre Memorial, the tragedy continues to raise a fundamental question about citizenship and the value of Nigerian lives.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“The message we’ve been sending about the Asaba Massacre is that Nigerian lives matter. And the fact that Nigerian lives have continued not to matter speaks to what happened in Asaba on October 7, 1967.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nduka-Eze said Asaba residents had believed the Federal troops approaching their town were coming as fellow Nigerians, not as enemies.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“They felt safe; Asaba was part of Federal territory, not part of Biafra. So, they felt if these troops came here, they would welcome them because ‘they are part of us.’ So, it was actually those believers in ‘One Nigeria’ who are no more today”, he explained.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, represented by Secretary to the State Government, Dr Kingsley Emu, said the State would continue to support efforts to preserve the memory.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“For many families, the pain was compounded by the denial of traditional burial rights to their loved ones. Yet, despite the passage of time, the people remember. Let us speak clearly: the killing of unarmed civilians can never be justified”, Oborevwori said.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He described the Memorial Center as significant because it would give the history “a permanent home”, preserving “names, personal objects, and records” for future generations.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Governor also urged Nigerians to learn the history without inheriting its bitterness, adding, “Do not inherit its bitterness; inherit its lessons.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Enotie Ogbebor, son of late Colonel Paul Ogbebor, also spoke of the tragedy as a reminder beyond Nigeria. “The massacre in Asaba is not any less than any of such unfortunate incident in other part of the world. It ranks at the same level,” he said.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At 59, therefore, Asaba’s story is no longer simply one of bloodshed. It is a story of widows who raised children alone, of survivors who rebuilt a city, of descendants who refused to allow the dead to disappear into history, and of a community now attempting to turn memory into reconciliation.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Asagba captured that delicate balance in a few words: “We may not forget, but certainly, we have to forgive.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That may be Asaba’s long road forward — carrying the wounds, accepting sincere apologies, forgiving where it can, remembering those it lost, and continuing to ask the nation for the closure it believes is still due.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On October 7, 1967, Asaba was plunged into one of the darkest episodes of the Nigerian Civil War. Dokubo-Asari relied heavily on this maxim when he threw out the staggering figure of N2.7 trillion allegedly paid to the Olu of Warri and the Okunbo family for pipeline surveillance. This figure is not just an exaggeration; it is a mathematical absurdity, an operational impossibility, and a profound insult to the intelligence of the Nigerian public.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“To put N2.7 trillion into proper perspective, one must look at the audited national budgets of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the capital expenditure profiles of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL).\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“NNPCL’s Production Cost Thresholds: For NNPCL to award a single surveillance contract worth N2.7 trillion to an individual or a localised cluster of individuals would mean allocating a massive chunk of the nation’s gross oil revenues purely to grass-clearing and pipe-watching. If you can remember a massacre and some other genocides committed in different parts of the world, what is actually wrong with having Biafran Day remembrance?\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“Since they have started remembering Asaba genocide, that’s okay. One by one they will remember other genocides, including the one in Aba and other parts of Biafra.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“We should not be suppressed from talking about it. It’s our history that cannot be buried. We should start talking about them until we tell ourselves the truth and accommodate every area where people were wronged.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to him, the Asaba commemoration could provide an opportunity for Nigerians to begin a painful but necessary national conversation about the civil war.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“They’ve been hiding this thing; they’ve been trying to cover it up. They’ve been attempting to cover up that it was a massacre. Now they’ve realised that it’s something that they need to talk about.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“Let’s go along with them. After now, we will go in a second step, a third step, until we reconcile all the patches involved in this Biafran experience.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“All this while, they’ve not taken this Biafran thing seriously, this massacre, this genocide. But now, I think somebody is telling them that they should bring it up and make things better.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">‘Civil war was needless’\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The war veteran blamed the Nigerian government for the civil war, describing the conflict as needless and questioning the justification for the enormous loss of lives.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“Nigerians don’t want to mention it because they know that it was a futile war they fought,” he said.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“They wasted lives of Igbos and other Biafrans for nothing, saying they want to keep Nigeria one. Look at the country now. Is there any justification for the war?”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nwoke said the country could not genuinely reconcile without confronting the circumstances, atrocities and consequences of the conflict.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“We need to reach out to the war veterans. This is our history. Whether it was right or wrong, we have a history.“Let us build on this history and ask ourselves where we went wrong so that we can do it right the next time. But when we don’t talk about it, nobody gets to know.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">‘Nigeria denying its children their history’\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The veteran also accused successive governments of deliberately failing to teach younger Nigerians about the civil war and the country’s historical figures.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to him, suppressing history only ensures that younger generations grow up without understanding the events that shaped the country.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He urged Nigerians to confront the country’s difficult past rather than bury it, arguing that honest remembrance could become a pathway to reconciliation\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“If you’re proud of your history, if you go to America now, one of the first places you  meet is American history. And so, you get to know \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">the people you’re dealing with.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“You come to Nigeria, our children have no idea about Nigeria. I talked to them,  None of them can tell you anything about Nnamdi AZikwe. None of them can tell you about Nigerian patriots. It’s like hiding behind a finger and you can’t do it. We ought to start opening up. Even if you made a mistake, you own up. Our children will learn from it.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">‘We’ve forgotten our war veterans’\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nwoke lamented what he described as the neglect of Biafran war veterans, saying many who survived the conflict had died in poverty without recognition.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“We’ve not done anything for our veterans. So, we don’t expect more from Nigeria,” he said.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“The war veterans have been totally forgotten. Nobody else remembers us. ‘Pampas’ died, wretched. And they’re waiting for me to die too, so that they’ll come and say, ‘Corporal Nwafor has died.’\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“I wanted to buy you a jeep. Bring it now. They won’t bring it.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He said the Igbo community should also look inward and honour its own historical figures and veterans instead of waiting for the Federal Government.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“You don’t remember Ojukwu. You don’t remember Akanu Ibiam. You don’t remember Mbakwe. You don’t remember anybody.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">‘I defended Umuahia 50% during war’\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Recounting his experience on the Biafran front, Nwoke singled out the Uzuakoli sector as one of the fiercest theatres of the war.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“The Uzuakoli sector was the hottest of the battles we fought,” he said, recalling that the fighting lasted about seven weeks, with two battles fought daily.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He made the striking claim that only three Biafran officers effectively defended Umuahia during the war.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“Colonel Emeka Ananaba (who later became Abia Deputy Governor) defended Umuahia 30 per cent. Colonel Joe Achuzie defended Umuahia 20 per cent. And myself, Corporal Nwafor, defended Umuahia 50 per cent,” he said.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nwoke also referred to the book Tragedy of Victory, saying its title aptly captured what he considered the paradox of the Federal Government’s victory.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“I’ve never seen a victory that turned into a tragedy. I’ve never seen. Only the Nigerian victory turned into a tragedy,” he said.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">‘War must have a reason’\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Explaining his earlier assertion that he would have committed suicide if he had fought on the Nigerian side, Nwoke said war should only be fought for a clearly defined and morally defensible purpose.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“You go to war with genuine reasons. War is serious business because you are going to kill somebody as well. You must have a good reason to go to war.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“Why did Nigerians go to war? To kill people, or to wipe people out, or did they go to build a nation? Maybe they didn’t tell us why they went to war. But they should come and tell us why they went to war.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He argued that nation-building, rather than military victory, should have been the ultimate objective.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“You want to build a nation. You’re not going to rig an election. You’re not going to wipe out people’s race. It doesn’t make sense.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“And after wiping out people’s race, what’s next? Look at the country today.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The veteran said the lessons of the civil war should therefore be used to build a more just and inclusive
