The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Plateau State University (PLASU) branch, has suspended its strike after reaching an agreement with the Plateau State government on the union’s six-point demands.
The decision was taken at an emergency congress meeting held by the union in Jos on Tuesday, where members reviewed the issues that led to the strike on August 26, 2026.
In a statement signed by the branch chairperson, Dr Vincent D. Choji, and branch secretary, Dr Lomka Iliya Kopdiya, ASUU said the suspension followed an agreement reached by the negotiating teams of the state government and the union.
The government delegation was led by the Head of Service, Mr Steven Pam Gadong, while the union team was led by its zonal coordinator, Professor Aku Timothy Namo.
According to the statement, “The meeting was held at the Conference Hall of the Head of Service, where both parties reached a reasonable conclusion on the six-point demands, including the commencement of the Contributory Pension Scheme and full implementation of the 2025 FGN/ASUU agreement, with payment of arrears from January 2026.”
The agreement also covered the provision of safe and secure staff quarters and the construction of trenches around the university’s perimeter fence.
The union said the government also agreed to stop the intimidation of union leaders, as earlier raised in a letter sent to Congress through the university registrar on May 18, 2026.
Another key issue was the payment of 22 months’ arrears of the 25 per cent and 35 per cent wage award.
“Having reviewed the agreement, Congress resolved that the strike be suspended with effect from 12:00 midnight, 16th September, 2026,” the statement said.
Following the decision, ASUU directed its members to resume all academic activities.
