Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has expressed sadness over the train accident along the Warri–Itakpe rail corridor near Agbor in Delta State, which claimed the lives of three passengers and left several others injured.

In a statement posted on his X page on Tuesday, Atiku extended condolences to the families of the victims and sympathised with the people and government of Delta State over the tragedy.

“I am deeply saddened by the tragic train accident along the Warri–Itakpe corridor near Agbor, Delta State, which claimed the lives of some Nigerians and left many others injured,” Atiku said.

“My heartfelt condolences go to the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives.”

The former presidential candidate also prayed for the speedy recovery of those injured in the accident and wished them strength as they receive treatment.

“I also pray for the speedy recovery of those receiving treatment and wish them strength in this difficult time,” he stated.

Atiku commended the Delta State Government, emergency responders and other personnel involved in rescue operations for their prompt intervention following the incident.

“I extend my sympathies to the people and Government of Delta State over this painful incident. I commend the swift response of the Delta State Government, emergency personnel, and all those involved in the rescue efforts,” he said.

The former vice president described the accident as a reminder of the need to improve safety measures across Nigeria’s transportation sector.

“This tragedy is a sobering reminder of the urgent need to strengthen safety standards and emergency preparedness across our transportation system,” Atiku noted.

The accident occurred along the Warri–Itakpe railway line near Agbor, Delta State, resulting in the death of three passengers and injuries to several others.

Atiku prayed for the repose of the souls of the deceased and comfort for their families.

“May God grant eternal rest to the departed, comfort the bereaved, and restore good health to the injured,” he said.

The Warri–Itakpe rail line remains one of Nigeria’s major standard gauge railway corridors, connecting communities and facilitating transportation between Delta, Edo and Kogi states.
