But where is the money? Where did it go?” Atiku was quoted as saying.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Bako argued that the position could put pressure on the Federal Government to provide a clearer account of the savings and demonstrate how Nigerians had benefited from the reforms.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>He said petrol prices could become a major campaign issue because of their impact on transport operators, farmers, traders and households.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>“Suddenly, 2027 election now has alternative, and in democracy, alternative is power,” Bako wrote.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>According to him, voters would assess competing economic proposals based on their effects on transport costs, food prices, household incomes and businesses.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>However, Bako noted that restoring petrol subsidies would raise questions about funding, affordability and transparency, including whether the policy could be sustained without increased borrowing or additional pressure on public finances.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The Federal Government has defended subsidy removal as necessary to ease pressure on public finances and free up resources for other priorities.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Bako also questioned the outcomes of the administration’s foreign exchange reforms, arguing that employment, infrastructure, healthcare, education and living standards would be important measures for assessing the government’s economic performance.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>He called for greater accountability in public spending, citing rising living costs and concerns over government expenditure, including lawmakers’ vehicles, Hajj subsidies and a proposed presidential yacht. The specific figures and claims surrounding these expenditures would need to be verified against official records.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The analyst further argued that Atiku’s reported position could generate debate among opposition figures, including Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso, although their respective positions on restoring petrol subsidies would need to be established independently.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Bako suggested that fuel prices could become a defining issue in the 2027 election, alongside inflation, employment, public spending and economic growth.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>“Election 2027 will not be about APC vs ADC. and their candidates are yet to fully hit the streets for campaigns, despite the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, opening the campaign window nearly two months ago.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to the commission’s timetable, the Presidential and National Assembly polls will be held on January 16, 2027 while those of the governorship and state houses of assembly will take place, three weeks later, on February 6, 2027.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">INEC cleared the way for Presidential and National Assembly elections campaigns last August 19 and that of the governorship and state assemblies, September 9.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since then, no serious campaigns have commenced. A couple of the leading parties have raised their Presidential Campaign Councils, PCCs, most are yet to do so.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As it is, exactly 97 days to the Presidential and NASS polls, and 118 days to the governorship and state assembly balloting, no party or candidate has unveiled his\u002Fher or its campaign plan and itinerary.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Unlike previous election cycles, when streets would, at this stage, be awash with posters and billboards and candidates would be criss-crossing their constituencies, in an unmistakable poster war, the current political atmosphere is relatively subdued.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now, the scenario is different as Saturday Vanguard’s checks across the country show. Only a handful of leading parties have constituted campaign councils, while many candidates are concentrating on consultations, grassroots mobilisation, party structures and legal battles.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But where campaigns have begun, another battle is emerging — the struggle for billboards and other public advertising spaces, with allegations of removal, destruction, intimidation and partisan use of regulatory powers.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch4 id=\"h-apc-crisis-stalls-poster-war-in-ondo\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">APC crisis stalls poster war in Ondo\u003C\u002Fh4>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Political activities remain low in Ondo State, with only a few APC candidates displaying posters at strategic locations.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Unlike previous election seasons, there is no poster war, as candidates of opposition parties are largely absent from the streets.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Investigations showed that only a handful of opposition candidates have pasted posters, while many are yet to print theirs.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The development has been linked largely to the crisis within the APC, where several aspirants who lost the party’s primaries have gone to court to challenge the outcome.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even among incumbent National Assembly members who secured return tickets, only a few have printed and displayed campaign posters.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The uncertainty surrounding candidacies has therefore slowed political activities.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The APC National Working Committee had dropped some aspirants after the primaries, triggering fresh crisis and litigation, which have combined to prevent the usual billboard and poster war.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meanwhile, billboards bearing the image of APC presidential candidate, Senator Bola Tinubu, are prominent across major towns and roads, while only a few posters of ADC presidential candidate, Alhaji Abubakar Atiku, are visible.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another factor is that there will be no governorship election in Ondo in 2027. The state will vote in the presidential, National Assembly and State Assembly elections.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch4 id=\"h-tinubu-dominates-ekiti\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Tinubu dominates Ekiti\u003C\u002Fh4>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The situation is similar in Ekiti, where the campaign landscape remains markedly different from the intense poster and billboard competition normally associated with elections.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tinubu’s posters and billboards are prominent across several locations, while the presence of opposition parties, particularly ADC and NDC, remains subdued.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A major political development is the decision of Dr Wole Oluyede, who contested the June 20, 2026 governorship election on the PDP platform, to support Tinubu’s re-election.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Oluyede has established the Oluyede Progressive Alliance for Renewed Hope Agenda, OPARHA, to mobilise support for Tinubu across the state’s 16 local government areas and 177 wards.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At a mobilisation rally in Ado-Ekiti, Oluyede and Governor Biodun Oyebanji jointly canvassed support for Tinubu and pledged to work for at least 90 per cent of the President’s votes in Ekiti.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For now, the physical campaign landscape is heavily tilted towards Tinubu and the APC.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch4 id=\"h-osun-no-defacing-of-posters\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Osun: No defacing of posters\u003C\u002Fh4>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Osun presents a different picture.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Campaign posters and banners are being displayed competitively without the widespread defacing that characterised the August governorship election.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Different parties have mounted campaign materials at public places without reports of widespread destruction.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The development contrasts sharply with the recent governorship election, which witnessed extensive destruction of posters and billboards belonging to major political parties.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch4 id=\"h-billboard-war-opposition-cries-foul-in-lagos\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Billboard war, opposition cries foul in Lagos\u003C\u002Fh4>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In Lagos, political activities are taking place amid heightened tension, early mobilisation and strict regulation of public advertising space.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The governorship contest involving the APC, ADC and PDP is attracting more attention than the Senate, House of Representatives and State Assembly contests, which remain relatively subdued.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">APC governorship candidate, Dr Obafemi Hamzat, and his running mate, Princess Damilola Sonayon-James, have established a strong presence, alongside President Tinubu.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Billboards bearing the images of Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima and Hamzat are prominent in Ikeja, Alausa, the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, Obalende and around the Third Mainland Bridge. The posters, which began appearing in August, are also visible around Agege, Alimosho and other areas.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By contrast, billboards of ADC presidential candidate and his running mate, Rotimi Amaechi, as well as NDC presidential candidate, Peter Obi and his running mate, Rabiu Kwankwaso, are yet to achieve comparable visibility.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The opposition has alleged harassment and removal of its campaign materials.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">NDC supporters accused the Lagos State Signage and Advertisement Agency, LASAA, of removing more than 50 banners belonging to Peter Obi and House of Representatives candidate, Dr Adefolaseye Adebomi, in Surulere while leaving APC materials intact.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">NDC chieftain, Aisha Yesufu, condemned the alleged action, describing it as the behaviour of a party that is “scared, desperate, and crumbling rather than one in control.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She also criticised the high alleged that a billboard belonging to its governorship candidate, Olooye Taofeek Adegboyega Adegoke, at Idi-Ape Junction, Ibadan, was removed and replaced with materials bearing the images of Governor are picking up across Edo’s three senatorial districts, with junctions and public spaces increasingly competing for campaign posters and banners.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The APC has inaugurated its campaign council, while Governor Monday Okpebholo, his deputy, Dennis Idahosa, and party leaders have commenced mobilisation visits to the Frank Uyi Omosigho, in Benin City.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Several campaign materials at the Stadium Road office were pulled down and damaged.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Omosigho said youths alerted him to the attack and urged young people not to allow politicians to use them to perpetrate violence.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“My appeal to youths is not to allow politicians to use them to perpetrate violence or other illegal acts. Anyone caught violating the law would face the consequences,” he said. He added: “The campaign materials were meant to introduce candidates and political parties to the electorate. Emmanuel Trumps Eke, denied that he or his principal signed the document.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The monarchs said the agreement was designed to promote equitable representation and peaceful coexistence between the Umunna and Ikwu-Isii blocs.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to the document presented to journalists, the House of Representatives seat would rotate between Bende North (Umunna) and Bende South (Ikwu-Isii), with each bloc entitled to two consecutive four-year terms.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The arrangement, which took effect from the 2019 electoral cycle, gave Ikwu-Isii the first opportunity, followed by Umunna.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Reading the document, HRH Eze Ebiri Oteri Okoro of Ohumola Autonomous Community, Igbere, said the pact remained relevant to political stability and fairness in the constituency.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Article 3 provides that the seat “shall rotate equitably” between the two blocs, while Article 4 stipulates that Ikwu-Isii would go first, after which the opportunity would pass to Umunna.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The document, however, recognises the constitutional right of qualified citizens to contest elections and the right of voters to choose their representatives.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Camp disowns document\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Reacting, Eke described the MoU as “false and an outright fabrication”, alleging inconsistencies in its dates, contents and signatures.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He questioned why two documents purportedly relating to the same agreement bore the dates January 19 and February 4, 2019.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He further alleged that the first page was lifted from a letter he and Kalu wrote to Bende stakeholders in 2019 seeking their support, but that its original contents had been removed and replaced.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Eke also claimed that Eze Onuoha Akaliro, Eze Jerry Akpala Igwe and Eze Patrick Ude told him they neither signed nor witnessed the document.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He maintained that no agreement on tenure or political rotation had been reached between Kalu and any group, arguing that zoning should be discussed by Bende political stakeholders, including the Bende Political Forum.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He urged the public to verify documents before circulating them, warning that anyone found to have forged or knowingly circulated a forged document could face legal consequences.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">How MoU emerged — Ukaegbu\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the signatories and Deputy Chairman of the Abia State Council of Traditional Rulers, HRH Uwakwe Ukaegbu, said the agreement was reached in 2019 following opposition to what he described as Umunna’s prolonged occupation of the federal constituency seat.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He said tensions arose when former representative, Hon. Nnenna Ujaeje, sought a fourth term, prompting Ikwu-Isii stakeholders to demand a fairer arrangement.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to him, Kalu, who was then aspiring to represent the constituency from Ikwu-Isii, welcomed the agreement and pledged to relinquish the seat after two terms if elected.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ukaegbu said the document was made public to counter claims that no such agreement existed, insisting that the arrangement was necessary to promote fairness and political stability.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another monarch, HRM Eze Joseph Ukoha Anyanta, urged politicians to honour the pact, describing it as an instrument for building trust between the two blocs rather than targeting any individual.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Umunna comprises Item, Igbere, Alayi and Ugwueke\u002FEzeukwu communities, while Ikwu-Isii comprises Bende, Itumbuzo, Umuhu-Ezechi, Ozuitem, Uzuakoli and Umuimenyi\u002FNkpa communities.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The monarchs named as signatories included Eze Jerry Akpala Igwe and Eze Uwakwe Ukaegbu for Umunna, and Eze Patrick Ude and Eze J.O. More than 27 traditional rulers from communities across the constituency gathered in Igbere on Friday to […]\nThe post 2027: Bende monarchs reaffirm zoning pact, Kalu’s third-term bid faces hurdle appeared first on Vanguard News.","\u003Cimg width=\"432\" height=\"342\" src=\"https:\u002F\u002Fcdn.vanguardngr.com\u002Fwp-content\u002Fuploads\u002F2026\u002F10\u002FMonarch.png\" class=\"attachment-large size-large wp-post-image\" alt=\"2027: Bende monarchs reaffirm zoning pact, Kalu’s third-term bid faces hurdle\" decoding=\"async\" srcset=\"https:\u002F\u002Fcdn.vanguardngr.com\u002Fwp-content\u002Fuploads\u002F2026\u002F10\u002FMonarch.png 432w, https:\u002F\u002Fcdn.vanguardngr.com\u002Fwp-content\u002Fuploads\u002F2026\u002F10\u002FMonarch-300x238.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 432px) 100vw, 432px\" \u002F>\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By Steve Oko\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The third-term ambition of Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, may face a fresh political challenge following the reaffirmation of a 2019 zoning agreement by traditional rulers in Bende Federal Constituency, Abia State.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More than 27 traditional rulers from communities across the constituency gathered in Igbere on Friday to publicly present the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), insisting that the agreement, which provides for the rotation of the House of Representatives seat between the Umunna and Ikwu-Isii blocs, remained valid.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The monarchs said the arrangement was designed to promote fairness, equitable representation and peaceful coexistence between the two blocs.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Under the agreement, Bende South, comprising the Ikwu-Isii bloc, was to occupy the seat for two consecutive four-year terms beginning with the 2019 electoral cycle, after which the opportunity would rotate to Bende North, comprising Umunna.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Reading the document before journalists, HRH Eze Ebiri Oteri Okoro of Ohumola Autonomous Community, Igbere, said the agreement was founded on the principles of fairness, justice, mutual respect and peaceful coexistence.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Article 3 of the MoU states that the Bende Federal Constituency seat in the House of Representatives “shall rotate equitably” between Bende North (Umunna) and Bende South (Ikwu-Isii).\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Article 4 stipulates that the arrangement took effect from the 2019 electoral cycle, with Ikwu-Isii having the first opportunity to occupy the seat.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The document further provides that the bloc occupying the seat should have the opportunity to serve two consecutive four-year terms, subject to the Constitution, electoral laws, party processes and the decision of the electorate.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“Upon completion of the two-term tenure, the opportunity shall rotate to Bende North (Umunna),” the agreement states, adding that no individual, community or political party should regard the seat as its permanent entitlement.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The MoU also urges political parties to respect the spirit of the agreement in their nomination processes.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, it recognises the constitutional right of every qualified citizen to contest elections and the right of voters to choose their representatives.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Umunna comprises Item, Igbere, Alayi and Ugwueke\u002FEzeukwu communities, while Ikwu-Isii comprises Bende, Itumbuzo, Umuhu-Ezechi, Ozuitem, Uzuakoli and Umuimenyi\u002FNkpa communities.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Explaining the circumstances surrounding the agreement’s emergence, one of its signatories and Deputy Chairman of the Abia State Council of Traditional Rulers, HRH Uwakwe Ukaegbu, said it was reached in 2019 following disagreements over what he described as Umunna’s prolonged occupation of the federal constituency seat.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ukaegbu said the agreement became necessary when former representative, Hon. Nnenna Ujaeje, from Umunna, sought a fourth term, an ambition that reportedly generated opposition from Ikwu-Isii stakeholders who felt their bloc had been marginalised.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He added that Kalu, who was then seeking election to represent the constituency on the platform of Ikwu-Isii, welcomed the agreement and pledged to relinquish the seat after two terms if elected.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The monarch said the public presentation of the document was intended to address claims that no such agreement had been signed.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He challenged anyone disputing its existence to produce evidence to the contrary, insisting that he would stand by the truth regardless of whose interests might be affected.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ukaegbu also cautioned political aspirants and their supporters against allowing personal ambitions to threaten peace in Bende, stressing that the collective interest of the constituency should take precedence over individual political calculations.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Speaking on behalf of the other traditional rulers, HRM Eze Joseph Ukoha Anyanta commended the promoters of the agreement, describing the arrangement as a demonstration of foresight that could strengthen mutual trust and peaceful coexistence between the two blocs.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He urged politicians to honour the pact, stressing that it was not designed to target any individual but to promote fairness in the distribution of political representation.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Other signatories to the MoU included HRM Eze Jerry Akpala Igwe and HRM Eze Uwakwe Ukaegbu for Umunna, and HRM Eze Patrick Ude and HRM Eze J.O.
