Attendance: Senate Considers Honours, Leadership Roles For Active Lawmakers

 

The Senate is considering the introduction of a system to monitor lawmakers’ attendance and participation in plenary sessions as part of efforts to boost commitment and engagement in legislative activities.

The proposal was raised during plenary by Senator Abdul Ningi, who called on the Senate leadership to keep detailed records of lawmakers’ attendance and contributions to debates and other legislative business.

According to Ningi, regularly identifying senators who actively participate in proceedings would encourage greater dedication to legislative duties and motivate members to remain in the chamber until the day’s business is concluded.

The suggestion received support from several lawmakers, some of whom argued that senators who consistently contribute to legislative work should be accorded special recognition. They proposed that active lawmakers be considered for honours and other forms of official commendation when such opportunities arise.

Backing the initiative, Senator Mohammed Monguno and the Senate Leader maintained that attendance and participation records could also serve as criteria when assigning leadership positions and other responsibilities within the upper chamber.

Contributing to the discussion, Deputy Senate President Jibrin Barau pointed to the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, as an example of commitment and discipline during her years in the National Assembly.

Barau recalled that Tinubu was known for her punctuality and regular attendance at Senate proceedings, describing her as one of the most dedicated lawmakers of her time.

He said her unwavering commitment to legislative responsibilities played a significant role in shaping her political journey and achievements.

According to the Deputy Senate President, the First Lady’s record demonstrates the value of discipline, consistency and active participation in public service, qualities he said should be emulated by serving lawmakers.

The Senate is expected to further deliberate on the proposal as part of broader efforts to strengthen accountability and improve participation in legislative proceedings.
