Armed bandits have allegedly killed an officer of the Nigeria Immigration Service, NIS, Assistant Superintendent of Immigration I Ibrahim Usman Babagiwa, and burnt his body following an attack on a surveillance team in Woko village, Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State.

The incident occurred on October 6, 2026, along the Tungan Taya-Woko axis, where Babagiwa and another officer, an Inspector of Immigration, were conducting a surveillance operation when they came under attack.

The surviving officer sustained machete injuries but managed to escape.

He is currently stable and responding to treatment, according to the Niger State Command of the NIS.

The command disclosed this in a press statement dated October 12, 2026, signed by its Public Relations Officer, DSI M. Abubakar, on behalf of the Comptroller of Immigration, Niger State Command.

The statement said Babagiwa’s remains were discovered in a burnt state two days after the attack.

He has since been buried in accordance with Islamic rites.

Despite the attack, the command said it remained committed to combating irregular migration and addressing other security challenges along Nigeria’s international border.
