Bank Witnesses Testify in Trial of Ex-NRC Boss Over $385,000, N165m Allegations

This Day about 4 hours 2 mins read

An Ikeja Special Offences Court has heard testimony from bank officials in the trial of former Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) Managing Director, Fidet Okhiria, over alleged financial misconduct involving $385,000 and ₦165.4 million. Okhiria is facing a seven-count charge bordering on money laundering, abuse of office and unlawful enrichment by a public official before Justice Rahman Oshodi.

At the resumed hearing, two compliance officers testified as prosecution witnesses for the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The first witness, Abasiama Idiong of Access Bank, told the court that the bank received EFCC requests between October 2025 and January 2026, for account statements and account-opening documents relating to Okhiria and another customer, Ndubusi Vincent.

Idiong said he retrieved the records, obtained the necessary approvals and forwarded them to the Commission. He also confirmed the account numbers, account holders and authorised signatories. Relevant bank documents were admitted as exhibits.

The second witness, Clement Mgbolu of Zenith Bank, said the bank received similar EFCC requests in June, September and October 2025. He testified that the records were verified and forwarded to the Commission, after approval by his superiors.

During cross-examination by defence Counsel, Adebowale Kamoru, Idiong maintained that the investigated accounts belonged to Okhiria, while Mgbolu confirmed that the transaction narrations appeared in the bank statements under investigation.
