Bauchi deploys 2,187 forest guards to strengthen security, protect natural resources

Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed has deployed 2,187 newly trained personnel of the Bauchi State Vigilante and Forest Security Services (BSVFSS) to strengthen security surveillance and protect the state’s forest reserves and natural resources.

The deployment followed a passing-out parade held on Saturday at the Police Training School, Yelwa, where the governor, represented by Deputy Governor Mohammed Auwal Jatau, formally authorised the operatives to commence duties in line with existing laws and regulations.

Mohammed said the initiative underscores his administration’s determination to promote environmental sustainability, preserve forest resources and improve security across communities.

He noted that the state’s forests play a critical role in agriculture, economic development, biodiversity conservation and the livelihoods of many residents, but are increasingly threatened by illegal logging, poaching and indiscriminate exploitation.

“I urge you to be good ambassadors and strictly observe the rules of engagement in all your operations to achieve the objectives of establishing the Forest Guard Corps,” he said.

According to him, forested areas have also become hideouts for criminal elements, necessitating stronger measures to secure them.

The governor explained that the recruitment of the 2,187 forest guards was aimed not only at protecting natural resources but also at creating employment opportunities for young people in the state.

He expressed confidence that the training received by the recruits had prepared them for the task ahead, urging them to discharge their responsibilities with integrity, professionalism and dedication.

Mohammed reminded the personnel that they are expected to serve as protectors of the environment and defenders of the state’s natural assets, warning that acts of indiscipline, abuse of office or collaboration with criminal elements would attract sanctions.

Speaking at the event, the State Commissioner of Police, CP Sani-Omolori Aliyu, represented by Deputy Commissioner of Police Musa M. Bulus, said the newly trained operatives would be expected to uphold high standards of conduct in the discharge of their duties.

He urged them to remain disciplined, respect the rights of citizens and contribute meaningfully to the protection of lives and property.
