Rather than diverting public attention to an early re-election campaign, he should devote whatever remains of his tenure to addressing the pressing challenges confronting the nation or, better still, acknowledge that he has fallen short of the expectations of Nigerians and gracefully withdraw from the 2027 presidential contest.

“History remembers leaders not for how desperately they sought to retain power, but for the wisdom they displayed in knowing when they had lost the confidence and goodwill of the people. For the sake of Nigeria’s future, President Tinubu should put the country first, abandon any re-election bid, and allow Nigerians the opportunity to choose a leadership capable of restoring competence, accountability, constitutional fidelity and hope to our beloved nation.”

Atiku specifically queried the contradictions surrounding the BCDA leadership tussle, asking, “How does a President publicly appoint a new head of a federal agency, yet weeks later the person said to have been replaced remains in office, continues to exercise authority, appears on the agency’s official website as its chief executive, and even holds official meetings with ministers? What exactly is the Presidency asking Nigerians and the international community to believe?”

He warned that the confusion was damaging the country’s standing with investors and development partners, noting that “every needless contradiction chips away at our national credibility. Investors are watching. Development partners are watching. The world is watching.”

The former Vice President also pointed to a legal dimension to the crisis, noting that while the Presidency announced both the outgoing and incoming officials as Director-General, the law establishing the agency provides for an Executive Secretary as its chief executive, a designation the agency itself still officially recognises.

Atiku described the BCDA episode as only the latest in a disturbing pattern of institutional disorder under the present administration, recalling the confusion that engulfed the Nigerian Postal Service NIPOST, where conflicting claims over the agency’s leadership left Nigerians uncertain which presidential directive was authentic.

He also cited the controversy surrounding the Presidential Foreign Intervention Promotion Council PFIPC, where the Presidency first distanced itself from the body before later directing an investigation, alongside recurring questions over budgetary allocations for projects unrelated to agencies’ statutory mandates and repeated policy reversals.

“When one incident occurs, it may be dismissed as human error. When it happens repeatedly, it becomes evidence of systemic failure. From NIPOST to PFIPC and now BCDA, this administration has demonstrated an alarming inability to coordinate even routine governmental decisions. Governance has been reduced to improvisation, while Nigerians are left to bear the cost of the confusion. These are no longer isolated public relations mishaps; they point to a deeper crisis of coordination, competence and accountability at the highest levels of government,” he said.

The post BCDA leadership Layered upon existing state repression of civic space and press freedoms and a deteriorating security situation, the current state of affairs could not be more dire.
On May 8, 2026, journalist and SJS Human Rights Secretary Mohamed Bulbul was abducted, beaten, and threatened by Somali National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA) and Mobile Vehicle Checkpoint Unit officers alongside two other journalists, Abdihafid Nor Barre and Abdishakur Mohamed Mahomud.
Prior to the raid, the journalists had received threats for their reporting on the planned opposition protests in Mogadishu. While in detention, Bulbul was interrogated about an article he co-authored on the case of Saadia Moalin Ali, a nursing graduate and rickshaw driver arrested and detained for her activism on social media. Following this initial interrogation, the men were transferred to the Banadir Regional Police Command and threatened with death if they continued to report on the planned opposition protests. The journalists were released just before midnight on the same day.
Despite being released, Mohamed Bulbul has continued to face repression and intimidation, ultimately forcing him to flee Somalia. The NISA officer who abducted Bulbul on May 8 has repeatedly sent Bulbul threatening messages via WhatsApp, including for allegedly "crossing a red line" for posting photos of the officer as part of Bulbul's reporting on the agency's repression of journalists and opposition figures.
Much of the harassment against Bulbul is linked to his journalism, his involvement with SJS, and his connection to SJS Secretary General Abdalle Mumin. Notably, Bulbul was previously arrested in August 2023 for publishing a report on allegations of corruption within the police and was beaten and held incommunicado by authorities before being released in October 2023.

Mohamed Ibrahim Osman (Bulbul) [left]; Abdihafid Nor Barre (centre) and Abdishakur Mohamed Mohamud (right). | PHOTO/SJS."Journalists in Somalia, including my colleagues, are increasingly facing intimidation, arbitrary arrests, and censorship as the country's political crisis deepens. These attacks are not only an assault on press freedom but also a serious setback for Somalia's democratic aspirations, peace, and stability," said SJS Secretary General Abdalle Mumin. "Silencing independent journalism undermines public trust, accountability, and informed civic participation at a time when the country most needs them. The Somali authorities must uphold their constitutional and international obligations to protect press freedom and ensure journalists can report without fear of reprisal. The international community must not remain silent in the face of these escalating violations."
Mohamed Bulbul's story reflects a growing level of press repression in Somalia. On June 1, 2026, authorities blocked and harassed journalists who were at the Banadir Regional Court to cover the trial of Sadia Moalin Ali and prevented them from using cameras or conducting interviews.
On June 23, 2026, authorities again blocked and harassed local media houses covering the trial. Most recently, on June 25, 2026, journalist Abdukadir Abukar Ali was abducted by armed Somali police officers from the Banadir Regional Court for reporting on Ali's trial.
Reporters covering security issues and recent protests have also been met with arrests and harassment. On June 26, armed police officers arrested Mohamed Ali Mohamud, also known as Qadaaye, in Mogadishu without a legal justification for covering the story of a police officer who complained that his salary had been cut by senior officers. Following his arrest, Qadaaye was taken to Kaaran Police Station and beaten, and authorities refused to let his family visit him in detention. Qadaaye was released on June 28 without charge, but continues to face threats. On May 25, journalist Abdirahman Jakataa was arrested for reporting on women who were allegedly robbed by security forces in Baidoa, south-west Somalia.
"One of the most fundamental elements of democracy is people's right to participate in their own governance through free speech and peaceful protest," said Ikechukwu Uzoma, Senior Staff Attorney for Africa at KHRC. "Repressing these rights, especially following the adoption of a new constitution, is an affront to people-centric leadership and is therefore condemnable."
SJS and KHRC urge Somali authorities to immediately cease their attacks on journalists and to uphold the freedoms of expression and assembly for all citizens, including members of the opposition.","Following the May 2026 passage of a new constitution to extend the office terms of the President and Parliament in Somalia, scheduled peaceful protests have been marred by state-sponsored violence.

SJS and KHRC urge Somali authorities to immediately cease their attacks on journalists and to uphold the freedoms of expression and assembly for all citizens, including members of the opposition.","sjs-and-khrc-condemn-rising-civic-space-repression-in-somalia
[2186,2187,2188,2189,2190,2155,2191,222],"sjs","khrc","condemn","rising","civic","repression
"32cbe1fe-0c20-4065-a109-d487ae8674bd","2026-04-22T09:53:01.550Z","Horn Observer","https://api.oneclickafrica.com/media/feed/9bdaeac4-b2fc-47ff-a4b7-cdc4c024883b.png","horn-observer","https://hornobserver.com/articles/3682/SJS-and-KHRC-Condemn-Rising-Civic-Space-Repression-in-Somalia
[2202,2222,2237,2253
"bb930b2b-ae3a-40ff-a174-366a2546daa2","2026-07-15T12:27:00.869Z","2026-07-16T02:18:38.000Z","‘We have to forgive ourselves’ — Kwankwaso calls for north, south-east unity",""We have to forgive ourselves.
